Overview

TMCC’s Associate of Arts degree in Social Work is designed for students seeking careers in social work or related fields. This is a profession in which you will most likely pursue a bachelors or masters in social work and TMCC’s program is a great place to get started. You can complete your first two years with TMCC and then transfer to UNR or another university to take the next step in your education.

Social work is the profession for you if you have a strong desire to help improve people’s lives. This career generally attracts people who are interested in creating positive change in the lives of individuals, families and communities. Social workers help clients identify their strengths and concerns, consider effective solutions, and find reliable resources. People who are conscientious, empathetic, caring, dedicated, and passionate will do well within this profession. It is important to also note that social work has its challenges, and the successful social worker must be strong enough to manage clients who are difficult or combative and to advocate for clients who face extremely challenging circumstances. However, the emotional rewards that come with helping clients overcome these hurdles can also be significant, and this is what keeps social workers engaged in their field.

Social Workers may tackle tasks such as:

  • Helping clients find and apply for public assistance programs
  • Assisting families in which a member is too aged or otherwise incapacitated to care for him or herself
  • Helping a child or teen find refuge from an abusive home

No matter the specific role the social worker chooses, a primary goal of the profession is to empower clients with the best resources and guidance they can provide.
