Military Transcripts
Students can have their military transcripts sent directly to TMCC. Military transcripts accepted at TMCC are as follows:
- Joint Service Transcript (JST) includes Army, Marines, Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.
- Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) includes U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve or Air Guard.
- Air University (AU) includes U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve or Air Guard.
Evaluation of Military Transcripts
In order for prospective or current students to have your transcripts evaluated, you must complete the following steps. Failure to complete these steps will result in a denied request and could possibly affect financial aid, VA Educational Benefits, and/or registration.
- Apply for Admission to TMCC.
- If you did not choose a degree program on the application for admission, you will need to select one. View the Degree/Emphasis Change Form »
- Complete TMCC’s Transfer Credit Evaluation Form.
Once you have completed the steps above, your transcripts will be evaluated by TMCC's Admissions and Records Office.
- CCAF and AU are considered an accredited college and will be evaluated under the policy on Advanced Standing from Other Colleges and Universities. If you would like to request a more in-depth evaluation of their CCAF transcript, contact a TMCC Academic Advisor.
- JSTs are considered a non-traditional source, and will be evaluated under the policy on Advanced Standing from Non-traditional Sources.
How Credit from a Joint Service Transcript is Applied to TMCC’s Degree/Certificate Programs
- A maximum of 25 percent of the units required for the degree/emphasis/certificate may be accepted in this category (i.e., 60 credit degree program students can receive up to 15 credits or 30 credit certificate program students can receive up to 4.5 credits).
- Up to 4 credits in physical education if the student has completed basic training. For most degree programs this credit will be applied as electives, unless PEX credit is required for the degree, then this credit would be applied towards that specific degree requirement.
- If students have relevant military coursework or occupations and appropriate recommendations from the American Council on Education related to their designated degree program at TMCC, then students should contact Academic Advisement to further discuss this. Academic Advisement will work with the department Chair/Dean for credit approval and/or having the credit applied to the student’s record
- If the department Chair/Dean approves credit towards a degree requirement, Admissions and Records will post this to the student’s record and it will appear on their Academic Advisement Report on MyTMCC.
Military Credit and Pre-Admission Requirements for Special Admit Programs
Along with credit being applied to a student’s degree program, TMCC's department/deans have been willing to waive certain pre-admission requirements into special admit programs, such as Nursing and Radiology, based on a student's relevant military experiences.
If you are looking to apply to a special admit program and would like to further discuss how your military experience might waive pre-admission requirements for Special Admit Programs, please contact a TMCC Academic Advisor.
American Council on Education and Credit Recommendation on Joint Service Transcripts
To evaluate Joint Service Transcripts, TMCC uses the recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE) listed on a student’s JST and consult Faculty/Deans/Department Chair on the acceptance of military credit. Further information can be found in ACE's Military Guide.

SB 457 and Transferability between Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Institutions
According SB 457, as of July 1, 2017 all NSHE institutions are required to evaluate all military transcripts and determine if military experience is applicable to the students desired degree plan. Acceptance of military credit will be determined throughout the evaluation process with the academic faculty, academic advising, and admissions and records.
"Pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes 396.568, an NSHE institution shall not require a student to repeat a course on transfer to a university or state college if an equivalent course was taken or successfully completed at any NSHE institution, except for programs that have defined a time limit for completion."
Contact Academic Advisement
Any further questions on the evaluation of military transcripts can be directed to Academic Advisor, Courtney Hytinen or Veteran's Academic Advisor, Susan Elbe.
