F.R.E.E. Whole-Campus Book Club for Belonging: Pre-Reading Strategies

Room Change

This is a hands-on workshop for all faculty and staff to use pre-reading strategies to make it easy to participate in the F.R.E.E. 21-22 Whole Campus Book Club for Belonging: Indigenous Perspectives. In the Fall of 2021, we will focus on There There by Tommy Orange and in the Spring of 2022 we will focus on An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.

We are about co-creating a sense of belonging as we read and participate in book-inspired curricula to learn cultural perspectives about trauma, healing, and joy. This kick-off workshop introduces strategies to (1) keep track of multiple points of view, (2) use excerpts to integrate into course and committee work, (3) develop curiosity from prior knowledge, and (4) relate book themes to current events and problem-solving involving diverse indigenous experiences.

Teaching to Transgress

This workshop will be an opportunity for those participating in the Pedagogy as Protest Book Club to discuss our summer read, Teaching to Transgress, by Bell Hooks. In this book, Hooks speaks to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom? Participants in the book club will discuss Hook's ideas and how we can apply them to our own teaching at TMCC.

The Answer is B: Better Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple choice (MC) questions can be used to measure learning outcomes at almost any level of Bloom’s taxonomy, but effective questions can be difficult to write. This workshop will show participants how to build validity and reliability into MC questions by constructing a table of specifications, and calculating and interpreting difficulty and discrimination indices within an item analysis. Presenters will then offer tips for writing more reliable and valid questions that are grounded in research and that participants will apply to their own multiple-choice questions.
