Seventh Generation Sustainability

In 2023/24 our FREE community theme is Seventh Generation Sustainability. Coming off an empowering “Year of Sustainability," we are ready for the long view. Together we created TMCC sustainability projects and reinforced a good foundation on which to build. Now the real work begins with the seventh generation principle. 

Seventh Generation is a Haudenosaunee (Hoe-den-oh-SHOW-nee) (Iroquois) principle to guide stewardship actions today with compassion for the unborn who will inherit this world.

FREE partners with the Sustainability Champions to offer forward-looking sustainability workshops, assist TMCC sustainability projects, and culminate in our Spring 2024 Earth Day, integrated into the schedule of classes for holistic culturally creative student, faculty, and staff interdisciplinary activities.

Our Seventh Generation theme invites a long view into sustainability. We use a culturally-relevant 200-year outlook. We ask three questions:

  • Will your current sustainability activities have a positive impact on Earth 200 years from now? How so?
  • What cultural stories about our mountains, lands, valley, rivers, trees inform your sustainability activities?
  • What changes can you make in one current sustainability activity to include Indigenous peoples and stewardship practices?

Butterfly Me Art Project with TRIO students
Micaela Rubalcava facilitates a workshop on integrating TMCC Pollinators Garden into academic engagement and student success through a mural about a growth mindset from cultural diversity in biodiversity.
