All veterans on campus are welcome at the TMCC Veterans Resource Center, now located in Red Mountain Building, room 241. Pictured is the new VRC computer lab.

“The new space and meeting rooms for our student veterans is so great that the veterans will be awed seeing it for the first time and very grateful,” said Zack Totans, Veterans Resource Center Coordinator.

Reopening in August, the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at Truckee Meadows Community College is now located in the Red Mountain Building, room 241. The Center was moved to the new, larger location during July, and a grand opening celebration is planned for the fall.

“There are about 650 veterans who attend TMCC and all are welcome to come check out the new spaces for studying, filling out paperwork, to decompress or meet other veterans,” Totans said. “Come on in any time.”

  • Mondays-Thursdays: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Where: Red Mountain Building, room 241

Each space in the suite of rooms has a dedicated function that facilitates the smooth transition from military life to an academic setting.

A welcome area in the new location leads to rooms including:

  • Computer and resource lab
  • Meeting room with conference table
  • Veterans lounge
  • Storage area
  • Administrative office
  • Office for community resources meetings and appointments

A social worker from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is on site every Tuesday and Wednesday to meet with student veterans.

“The lab has six new computers networked to a printer and can be used for filling out applications and paperwork required for veterans benefits or to access for homework and research,” Totans said.

When a second staff member is on hand to assist veterans, he or she will be stationed in the computer lab. VRC staff help with the sometimes complex, multi-page government forms and can direct veterans to resources at the college or in the community. Nevada JobConnect regularly visits the VRC to assist veterans with jobs, and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services help with disability claims. Reno Vet Center and other groups and organizations also frequently stop by campus.

“The conference room can be used for TMVC meetings or when the Vietnam Veterans of America visit campus,” he said. “Any veteran can take part in the Truckee Meadows Veterans Club, not only student veterans.”

TMVC is a Student Government Association (SGA) recognized club. It meets twice a month at the VRC. Their new president for this academic year is John Gray.

Fall Aceball Fundraiser

Gray would like to invite TMCC students, faculty and staff to the Club’s upcoming Fall Aceball Fundraiser event. The Reno Aces will take on the Tacoma Rainiers for the last home game of their regular season.

  • When: Sunday, Aug. 28, 1:05 p.m.
  • Where: Greater Nevada Field, 250 Evans Ave., Reno
  • Tickets: $20, vouchers available at TMCC VRC

All in the TMCC community may also purchase tickets for friends and family to attend. A portion of the proceeds will go to the TMVC. Their goal is to sell 300 tickets in order to raise $2,700, Totans said. Everyone who buys a ticket will also receive a free Aces hat.
