English Co-Requisite Wrap-Around Tutoring Developer/Coordinator

Per the NFA Contract, Article 10, TMCC is announcing to all eligible academic and administrative faculty that a need exists for one English Co-Requisite Wrap-Around Tutoring Developer/Coordinator.

Posting Date

January 24, 2020

Description

The English Co-Requisite Wrap-Around Tutoring Developer/Coordinator, supervised by the Dean, working in concert with the Learning Commons director and TMCC English Co-Req task force, will develop, coordinate, and provide services for English composition tutoring support as part of the implementation of the Co-Requisite English plan. The current peer tutor system lacks the training and expertise (as well as simple number of tutors within its ranks) to fully address the needs of 100s of new corequisite students beginning Fall 2020. A successful corequisite tutoring presence for ENG 100 sections will require that English full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and the tutoring coordinator work together to ensure faculty involvement as trainers of peer tutors for content consistency but also to serve possibly as content coaches for supplemental instruction and group tutoring sessions. The Developer/Coordinator will collaborate to produce plans for implementing this work.

Scope of Work

This assignment will begin February 10, 2020 and will end May 22, 2020. It will entail approximately 9 hours per week over the course of Spring semester. This additional assignment is not automatically renewed.

Responsibilities and Deliverables

  1. Conduct research into best practices for “just-in-time” tutoring associated with Co-Requisite English Composition.
  2. Coordinate with the Learning Commons Director and facilitate a conversation between the English Department Co-Requisite Task Force, English Department Faculty designing ENG 100, and the Learning Commons to ensure faculty and institutional consensus regarding how best to utilize tutoring as a central wrap-around support service for English corequisite students.
  3. Develop, with the support of the Learning Commons director, a plan/strategy for implementing by Fall 2020 “just-in-time” tutoring for the support needs of ENG 100. The plan will address:
    1. Training and expertise of tutors
    2. Recruitment of qualified tutors
    3. Direction of tutors
    4. Continuing involvement of English department faculty in the Co-Requisite Tutoring process
    5. The need for and role of content coaches for supplemental instruction and group tutoring sessions.
  4. Conduct on-boarding of new tutors/tutor directors, etc. as needed.
  5. Work with the Math Department on implementing strategies.
  6. Function in the role of tutor during Spring semester to try out best practices.
  7. As needed, attend meetings relating to the Co-Requisite Implementation and the development of ENG 100 curriculum.
  8. Write reports as required.
  9. Other duties agreed to with the Dean and the Chair.

Accountability

The developer/coordinator will provide a biweekly written report on the status of the above responsibilities to the Dean, Co-Requisite Task Force, and Learning Commons Director.
