Drop-In Tutoring

Drop-in tutoring is ideal for students who like to work independently, but want to have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance whenever needed. Students are assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis and are welcome to stay and study in the drop-in center even if they do not need immediate assistance.

Students are allowed unlimited hours of drop-in tutoring each semester.

Appointment Tutoring

Appointment tutoring is perfect for students who have several questions, or would like more intensive assistance. Students can schedule up to one hour per day, and up to three hours per week in appointments.

Students can schedule one-on-one tutoring appointments that can be 30 minutes or one hour in length.

Supplemental Instruction and Embedded Tutoring

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) involves regularly-scheduled, tutor-led study and review sessions, conducted outside of and in addition to normal classroom/lecture time.

Sessions are open to all students enrolled in any section of a particular course, and seek to provide students with an opportunity to explore course materials from new perspectives. Students who attend SI tend to have higher course grades and semester GPAs than students who do not attend, and regular attendees have an even higher boost! If you are struggling with a course, attending SI sessions may be a great way to improve your understanding and academic performance.

In SI, students work actively and collaboratively under the guidance of a trained SI leader to come to deeper understanding of key concepts and problems. SI leaders are tutors who have previously taken and done well in the course in question. They can help students improve their study skills and understanding of course materials based on their own personal experiences as a tutor and as a student.

Students may attend as many SI sessions in a given semester as they would like. Attendance is free, and the hours spent in SI do not count toward your daily/weekly appointment tutoring caps.

If you are interested in becoming an SI leader, or if you are an instructor who would like to recommend someone to be an SI leader, please refer to our Work with Us web page.

Embedded Tutoring

Embedded Tutoring is a type of Supplemental Instruction in which the assigned tutor attends all or some class meetings for a specific section of a course, depending on the needs of the students and instructor.

The exact role of the embedded tutor is flexible, but some examples include:

  • Assisting with group discussions or activities
  • Offering mini-tutorials for small groups or individuals who need additional support
  • Demonstrating and modeling positive student behaviors
  • Serving as a liaison between students and tutoring or other academic services.

Embedded tutors are not Instructional Assistants and are not permitted to grade exams or assignments, proctor exams or quizzes, or enforce classroom management or discipline policies.

If you are an instructor and you would like to request an embedded tutor, please complete our ET/SI Request form.

Biology Open Lab

The biology open lab, located in RDMT 310, is a resource dedicated to TMCC students enrolled in BIOL 190, BIOL 223, BIOL 224, and BIOL 251 and their associated labs.

During open lab hours, students can ask tutors questions about lab and lecture materials, find resources to enhance their understanding of core concepts or build study skills, improve and practice microscope skills, or view slides, dissection materials, or cadavers from lab classes.

Please note that the open lab is located in the Anatomy and Physiology Lab. Between open lab hours, the room is used for Biol 223 and Biol 224 labs. While the room may be in use throughout the day, open lab services are only available during the times listed below.

In addition, closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times to use any services (including tutoring) at the biology open lab, and gloves must be worn when handling or viewing models, dissection materials, or cadavers.

To view current Open Lab hours, please sign in to our appointment scheduler, or stop by the TLC front desk.
