Heartfelt Syllabi Welcome Statement

Full

This class is now full. Look for this class to be offered in the Fall semester.

This is a two-week self-paced Canvas workshop to write a heartfelt syllabi welcome statement for your courses and office. Your personally written statement augments the VPAA consolidation link of various official statements. Your short statement will invite diverse students into your most important course outcomes, tailored to your own view about humanity. Your syllabus is often the first interaction students have with your curriculum. Offering an authentic statement is like setting out a beautiful welcome mat at your front door. You will review six ideological approaches to welcome statements and fashion your own with positive suggestions and feedback. This workshop encourages you to explore your academic freedom and ways to extend a sense of belonging through professional practice. Limited to 12 people. Assistance with logging into a Canvas class is available through WebCollege, 775-673-7814. Note: This is a Diversity Track* Class. Complex Outcomes in Composition: Collaborative Consideration

Synthesizing and crediting the ideas of others: what does this look like toward the end of the first-year composition sequence? How do we differentiate and evaluate the elements of a proficient verses marginal synthesis? What metaphors might we use to describe it? English department faculty will be discussing and “reverse norming” pre-scored synthesis assignments from the fall, with an eye on reaffirming department standards for the synthesis learning outcome. Additionally, faculty are invited to share and discuss their own assignments and activities that support synthesis. This workshop will be interactive and maybe even a little fun.

A Place to Stand: Building the Inclusive Classroom

If you enjoyed the Kick-Off's Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jose Bowen and his talk on inclusivity, this class will give you more depth on the subject. This presentation will emerge from a series of conversations with one another about what it means for a student to “see” and “hear” themselves in the classroom. More specifically, we’ll focus our conversations on inclusive course content, inclusive instructional strategies, and the impact of each on student engagement and success. Ultimately, our goal is to share the intellectual shape that our collaborative, exploratory conversations take—conversations which will be anchored in theory, research, and direct classroom experience—with other TMCC faculty; doing so to provide a forum for pedagogical reflection, inquiry, and discussion. Note: This is a Diversity Track* Class. Complete at least THREE Diversity Track classes and receive a Diversity Track Certificate of Completion.

Learning LaTeX: Basics for Formatting Equations, Tables and Graphs for Exams

This workshop will offer STEM faculty an additional way to create exams using the LaTeX typesetting system. This can be an effective tool in formatting equations, tables, graphs, and more within a written document. We will explore open-source LaTeX packages and templates, and registrants will create an account to a free, online LaTeX editor where their documents will be saved and accessible at any time. Our goal will be to create an exam that exhibits a variety of mathematical diagrams (i.e. equations, tables, graphs, images, etc.) to serve as a base model in creating future exams.

Re-ignite Reading in the College Classroom

Research indicates that many students do not do the assigned reading for class: or they do not read for full comprehension or at the depth faculty would like them to. This workshop will focus on ways that faculty in all disciplines can encourage students to read purposefully for their classes, including strategies for reading digital and OER texts. In addition to research-based general techniques for encouraging students to read more effectively, participants will leave with specific strategies that work for most fields and disciplines. There will be time for a Q&A to discuss any questions about college-level reading and study skills.

Equitable Grading: Rethinking Old Conversations

"Will I be graded for this?" A question that created the traditional model of grading is being reexamined to the purpose of asking ourselves, how can I make my grading practices more equitable? What is the role of support work? And how does demonstrated learning fit into grading? Different approaches to equitable grading will be introduced and discussed, such as new ideas when considering attendance, participation and late work. The goal is to have a conversation about the different grading models that exist and learn from one another, not to identify one as "right" or "wrong". By giving meaning to our own grading practices, we can strive for equity that highlights student achievement and overall learning.
