In this series, faculty will share success strategies utilized as they redesigned classes to be delivered remotely this past spring. Paula will discuss her “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” commitment to synchrony within her courses and how she integrated in-class techniques within a virtual (Canvas) setting. She will also discuss “lessons learned” as she ventured into the new reality of the spring classes, and you will get ideas that you can utilize as well.

Regular class meetings using Canvas Conferences (bigbluebutton), handwritten assignments, and deep integration of publisher’s websites in Canvas were keys to student success. You will also learn how a Cam scanner app and the Canvas app were great tools used in her classes; ideas you might want to try out as well.

Kyle will share his successful solutions for student engagement including: virtual labs, using prerequisites to aid student progression, embedding recorded lectures and other media and utilizing multiple due dates for assignments. Creative uses of Google Drive were also keys to his course redesign this spring. He will discuss his strategies for teaching applied technology topics remotely and how it can be done.

Spring 2020 Assessment Day is moved to August as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a required time for faculty to discuss assessment-related activities in their departments following an initial gathering as a whole. In our initial meeting, we will continue our conversation on the value of curriculum mapping and introduce how to establish maps in eLumen. We then ask departments to devote and document some of their department meeting agendas to specific assignments and processes.

TMCC students come from all walks of life. As an example, during the spring 2019 semester, 66% of students were enrolled in six or more classes, 55% were traditional age, 40% were non-traditional, and 6% were under 18 years of age. In terms of their ethnic diversity, 55% of students identify as white and 43% as ethnic minorities. During this session you will learn about the circumstances and barriers for students from all backgrounds, and with a particular focus on identity, the facilitator will provide tools to utilize when helping students succeed academically.

An increasing number of TMCC programs require or encourage internships, placing students in temporary work settings to gain valuable experiential and applied learning. A recent federal regulation has opened the doors for apprenticeships to extend beyond the building trades and other traditional areas. Now, almost any program on campus can consider developing an apprenticeship program, which benefits students with debt-free education while they also build real-time work experience. Research suggests that students continue to struggle with feeling disconnected in online courses. In this session, we will take on the mindset of students and consider what they see on the first day “walking” into an online classroom. We will talk about the importance of human connection and creating a classroom community, even when students never see one another.
