Helping Students Understand and Build Social Capital

Relationships, networking and Social Capital...we, as educators, know the value of these concepts for our students. But many of our students, including those who are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, do not know how to develop these and how to use them properly. Simple misunderstandings can also harm relationships with students from poverty, even with no ill intentions. In this session, we will explore Social Capital and how to train our students to build and use it beyond the classroom.

Starfish Engagement Focus Day – Inspired and Facilitated by Faculty for Faculty

The Starfish Engagement Focus Day is the kickoff of the Year of the Starfish (based on the Atlantis calendar). All teaching faculty will meet in Sierra 108 from 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m., and receive general information about Starfish and hear presentations from the four Starfish Faculty Facilitators. Lunch will follow! Then faculty will move to a computer lab with their cohort and assigned facilitator where the facilitator will run faculty through use cases for the main features of Starfish. Each faculty cohort will be given a 'syllabus' that details which features will be the focus for practice and discussion for specified times during the academic year. Each full-time teaching faculty member who actively participates in the Fall and Spring professional development workshops and is an active member of their Starfish cohort throughout the academic year will receive $150 stipend ($75 in December and $75 in May).
