It’s that time of year when holiday shopping is on everyone’s mind. Between the mega sales in stores on Black Friday, supporting local shops on Small Business Saturday, and taking advantage of online specials on Cyber Monday, it’s important to remember there are still people in need, especially during the holiday season.

Giving Tuesday was started by New York City’s 92nd Street Y in 2012 as a response to all the consumerism of the holiday season. In its first year, the program raised approximately $10 million and has experienced rapid growth every year since, with nearly $117 million raised across all donation platforms in 2015.

The concept of Giving Tuesday continues to grow each year in a wide variety of iterations across the world. Some organizations participate in the actual day, while others choose to take a step back from the hype and have their own “giving days” during November and December that look similar to Giving Tuesday, but with a twist.

The impact of Giving Tuesday, or any “giving day,” lies in the social aspect of it. Besides sending out emails or direct mail pieces, organizations often do major social media campaigns in the days leading up to Giving Tuesday, especially on Facebook and Twitter, and Truckee Meadows Community College is no different.

Check out our campaigns on Facebook and Twitter.

You can help Truckee Meadows Community College assist its students by supporting this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign. Gifts help in a variety of ways, from providing students the funds to cover tuition for as short as a semester or as long as an entire school year. You can direct your gift to helping students purchase books and other materials necessary for completing their coursework, or you can choose to have your gift go to the area of greatest need by making an unrestricted gift.

Visit TMCC’s Giving Tuesday website to make your gift on November 29 or anytime, and be counted among the millions who are making charitable gifts to their favorite nonprofit organizations. Without your passion for TMCC, our students would not be as successful as they are. Whether you’re a student, faculty member, or a friend of the College, your continued commitment to our programs makes a difference every single day and we appreciate you.
