It’s that time of year when holiday shopping is on everyone’s mind. Between the mega sales in stores on Black Friday, supporting local shops on Small Business Saturday, and taking advantage of online specials on Cyber Monday, it’s important to remember there are still people in need, especially during the holiday season.
Giving Tuesday was started by New York City’s 92nd Street Y in 2012 as a response to all the consumerism of the holiday season. In its first year, the program raised approximately $10 million and has experienced rapid growth every year since, with nearly $117 million raised across all donation platforms in 2015.
The concept of Giving Tuesday continues to grow each year in a wide variety of iterations across the world. Some organizations participate in the actual day, while others choose to take a step back from the hype and have their own “giving days” during November and December that look similar to Giving Tuesday, but with a twist.
The impact of Giving Tuesday, or any “giving day,” lies in the social aspect of it. Besides sending out emails or direct mail pieces, organizations often do major social media campaigns in the days leading up to Giving Tuesday, especially on Facebook and Twitter, and Truckee Meadows Community College is no different.

Gifts help in a variety of ways, from providing students the funds to cover tuition for as short as a semester or as long as an entire school year.
