SGA Awarded for Keeping Truckee Meadows Beautiful

If you’ve ever driven through the gorgeous red hills leading up to TMCC and enjoyed the stunning scenery, you’ve probably noticed how fresh everything feels. Our Student Government Association is a large reason why our views stay as beautiful as they are, and they were recognized for all their hard work over the summer!

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) awarded our SGA the Adopt-A-Spot Adopter of the Year Award for their consistent cleanup and hard work keeping Dandini Blvd. and Sun Valley Community Park looking fresh. The Adopt-A-Spot Program gives businesses and community groups a chance to adopt local parks, areas along the river, and open spaces and keep their spots clean. This includes conducting a minimum of three clean-ups per year with tools provided by KTMB.

“This has been such a great match for our students, TMCC and our surrounding community,” Keith Bingham, student life and development associate, said. “TMCC's students are the reason this has been so successful. The group makeup is always different, but the comradery that quickly develops between students that didn't know each other hours before still amazes me. The amount of work they accomplish in those few hours is always very visible and rewarding.”

The SGA was celebrated at the Raise the River Gala in August. Participants were treated to a sensory evening- listening to local music, tasting craft drinks and a meal prepared by Chef Mark Estee from Liberty Food and Wine Exchange, and smelling the flowers at the Sensory Garden.

Want to help keep the College beautiful? SGA is hosting more clean-up events throughout the semester. Contact SGA for more information. And remember, if you’re driving by and see a sign with the SGA name and logo, make sure to look around and take in the beauty.

Jennifer Salisbury Recognized for Paralegal Work

The College has always been able to boast about the amazing faculty and staff that keep students engaged, and this summer part-time instructor and College alumnus Jennifer Salisbury was recognized for her work as a professional paralegal.

As a member of an affiliate organization of NALA – The Paralegal Association, Salisbury was awarded the Affiliates Award for outstanding contribution and dedication to the advancement of the paralegal profession through volunteer services to NALA affiliated associations. Salisbury assists in planning continuing legal education (CLE) opportunities for other paralegal members and provides guidance and exam preparation for paralegals seeking to sit for the certified paralegal (CP) exam.

“It has been a pleasure to work with my local paralegal organization and assist to promote the profession,” Salisbury said. “My relationship with the Sierra Nevada Association of Paralegals (SNAP) began when I was a student in the Paralegal/Law Program at TMCC, over 11 years ago. This award is a great honor. I will be continuously grateful for the career opportunities and network of fellow paralegals I have gained, which all began at TMCC!”

Veterinary Nursing Instructor Julie McMahon was awarded for her amazing work as a veterinary technician educator.

Another amazing instructor that was recognized over the summer is Julie McMahon, who was awarded the Margi Sirois Veterinary Technician Educator of the Year for her exceptional representation of veterinary technicians in education.

McMahon is a shining example of what the award represents- a teacher and veterinary technician that models respective teamwork and assists students in integrating key skills into their own work. This award is given to technician educators who create works that advance the field of veterinary technology.

As an alumna herself, McMahon has contributed her skills and knowledge to the College in a variety of ways, including teaching veterinary nursing and critical care to many students throughout her time here.

“Besides teaching, Julie’s most important strength at school is her connection to the students,” said Michele Noreen, professor and veterinary nursing and veterinary assistant programs director. “If I go through a list of students and graduates from the program, I can check off numerous students who succeeded and are thriving because of Julie.”
