TMCC Commencement 2024

TMCC Commencement • May 10, 2024 Truckee Meadows Community College Ceremonial Mace Most consider the use of the mace as a symbol in higher education to date back to 14th century Europe. Exact symbolism varies from college to college, often reflective of a college’s uniqueness. The TMCC Ceremonial Mace stands for authority, self-governance, dignity, and defense of the institution, as well as academic freedom for faculty, staff, administrators, and students. Kelly V. Oswald, Manufacturing Technology Professor, Machining Department, crafted the Ceremonial Mace in 2023. The mace is made from contrasting aluminum, brass, copper, and stainless steel for strength and durability. The varying colors are symbolic of Nevada’s rich mining history and our title as The Silver State. Prominently featured in the design is a spherical triple helix which represents motion, symbolic of our collective journey as lifelong learners. The five rounded copper studs on the cutting edge of each of the mace’s thirty-three blade segments represent TMCC’s five academic divisions. Their placement is symbolic of the college’s commitment to keep each of our academic programs and disciplines forever on the cutting edge of education, technology, and best practices. Each of the blade segments is adorned with a mirrored visual representation of the first six digits of the Fibonacci Sequence, which is widely regarded as a representation of divine beauty. The mirrored image reflects both the beauty we hold inside, and the beauty of nature. The design incorporates two lizard reliefs, symbolic of the high desert environment of the Truckee Meadows, along with a variety of other elements.
