Career Options

The Computer Technologies Department offers degrees, certificates and classes that will provide students with opportunities to apply for and secure employment in the ever-growing technical companies moving to northern Nevada, including Switch, Amazon, Apple and Tesla.

The demand for tech-savvy personnel is at a critical level. Many smaller companies requiring technical expertise are also looking for people.


TMCC's Career Center can also offer assistance in looking for and obtaining an internship with local companies willing to give real-time work experience.

A+ Certified Technician


You can learn the skills required for an A+ Certification—the foundation of your IT career—at TMCC! You must pass two exams to earn this certification. An association of over 200 computer manufacturers sets the A+ Certification program standards.

What is Covered in the A+ Program?

Student will be able to:

  • Identify personal computers and their components.
  • Learn how to configure and use laptops and portable devices.
  • Understand how to install and upgrade operating systems using primarily Windows 7 operating systems.
  • Identify fundamental principles of printers and scanners to include troubleshooting and configuration.
  • Identify the use of Networks and networking for PCs and laptops.
  • Understand the fundamentals of security in today's computer world.
  • Know the proper procedures of disposing of potentially hazardous computer components and environmental issues along with safe practices.
  • Understand the principles of professionalism and communications with users.

Cisco Certification


TMCC's Cisco classes introduce students to the demanding world of network technicians and managers. We are part of the Cisco Academy which requires TMCC to adhere to the curriculum required by our Cisco-certified instructors.

Cisco certification is considered the premium requirements for network technicians/managers.

Entry-level Cisco certifications begin either with Cisco Certified Entry Level Technician (CCENT) certification as an interim step to the associate-level, or a Cisco Certified Technician (CCT) certification.

With a CCENT certification, a network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network operating and support positions—the starting point for many successful careers in networking. Cisco-certified technicians have the skills to diagnose, restore, repair, and replace critical Cisco networking and system devices at customer sites.

Cybersecurity Skills Certification

This skill is very much sought after in today's technical fields. This certificate is designed to provide the knowledge and skills recommended by the National Security Agency for 2-year college programs. It provides foundational cybersecurity skills and preparation for professional certifications, such as Security +, that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Linux Certification

Completion in the Linux Professional program is designed to help prepare students for a variety of industry-recognized Linux certification exams, as well as provide practical hands-on skills for the work place.

The program includes the core of Linux classes including Linux operating system basics, system administration, and Network+. These classes will help develop a student's knowledge and skill level in preparation for employment or to improve current professional skills.

Skills certification provide training for entry-level positions or career advancement and are designed to prepare students to take state, national and/or industry-recognized certification or licensing exams. Skill certificates are awarded upon completion of course work and marked on a student’s transcripts at the end of the semester.

Linux is fast becoming the standard for network infrastructure. Those who obtain certifications in Linux demonstrate they are capable of entry-level support for such infrastructures.

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification Classes

Microsoft IT Academy Program

Truckee Meadows Community College offers two different classes in preparation for taking Office Specialist exams. These courses are Microsoft-approved study guides for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification program.

In these classes, students will gain the ability to use the advanced features of the Microsoft Office applications. Students interested in enhancing their skills will also enjoy these classes. Each class is offered in online e-learning. Choose the class that best supports your lifestyle and you have taken the first step to discovering the unique benefits of Microsoft Office Specialist.

Note that the certification exams are not administered as part of the class. Students interested in taking the exams can find an authorized testing center.
