Overview

Right in the heart of creativity and technology lies architecture. Both a social art and a technical science, architecture is the designing and construction of physical structures in their simplest form. From local parks to the tallest skyscrapers, architects have key roles in building our communities and have the power to impact millions of people's daily lives.

TMCC offers multiple academic paths for students interested in the fields of Architecture, Residential Design, Landscape Architecture and Construction Management. You can then apply to the Bachelor of Architecture degree program if you choose.

What Will I Study?

At their core, the licensed design professions of Architecture, Residential Design and Landscape Architecture are about problem-solving. All designs begin with ideas shaped by life experiences. Ideas are the driving forces behind the forms and shapes of our natural and built environments.

Regardless of the emphasis, all Architecture students will learn about architecture and design fundamentals. Additionally, in the Construction Management degree program, you will learn how to utilize and interpret construction documents as per industry standards.

If you choose to pursue residential design, you will focus on building design, from single-family residences to fourplex apartments. If you are interested in landscape architecture, you will study how the region's design is influenced by nature, climate and topography.

Architecture and Design Technology

Bachelor of Architecture (BArch)

The Bachelor of Architecture degree is a unique 5-year program with a focus on career readiness that considers the environmental factors in the Great Basin High Desert. Architecture is a growing field in northern Nevada, with significant growth identified in the next 5-10 years. For this reason, local employers have expressed strong support and need for graduates of this program. You will experience real-world design problems in a studio setting while building a comprehensive portfolio and learning from instructors and professionals practicing in the region.

The Bachelor of Architecture degree highlights the climatic conditions in northern Nevada, where most of the precipitation comes from snow. Focus areas of curricular study include, but are not limited to, passive heating and cooling concepts, urban development/wildland fire interfaces, sediment transport, carbon neutrality, and stewardship towards scenic resources.

Prepare for an exciting program, as this degree builds upon lower-division degrees and creates the fastest and most affordable route to licensure. This program is applying for initial candidacy with the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). See BArch Accreditation Information.

Admission Information

Admission to the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) program requires you to have already earned an Associate Degree in Architecture, or have concluded two years of architectural instruction and be evaluated by faculty before admission.

You may receive a substitution of some academic credits, if you are an applicant transferring to TMCC from another educational institution, or if you have a professional practice background in the field of architecture, construction, design, or engineering with evidence by certificates, work samples, records and transcripts. Your transferrable credits will be determined upon individual evaluation by admissions and faculty.
