Radiologic Technology Program
Career Ladder Beyond The Entry Level Staff Radiographer
Radiation Therapy Technologist R.T. (T)
Radiation therapists are responsible for treating patients with a radiation beam or "source". They also assist the physician with the "set up" and "dosage" that a patient will receive during cancer treatment. Radiation therapists must possess a high degree of sensitivity and caring in addition to extensive knowledge and technical skills. Employers require certification in radiation therapy by the ARRT.
Nuclear Medicine Technologist R.T. (N)
Nuclear medicine technologist actively participates in the performance of diagnostic imaging procedures which analyze both the anatomy and physiology of the human body. These procedures are performed following the administration of a radioactive drug to patients and analyzing the distribution and concentration of that radioactive drug with gamma cameras. Most employers require certification by the ARRT or the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB).
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer R.D.M.S.
Diagnostic medical sonographers combine creativity with advanced technological ultrasound equipment to produce images of the body. Sonographers use high frequency sound waves to demonstrate anatomy. Most employers require certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS).
Computed Tomography Radiographers R.T. (CT)
Computed tomography technologists are responsible for taking detailed cross sectional images of the internal structures of the human body using advanced computerized x-ray equipment. This is not usually an entry level position. Most employers require ARRT certification. The ARRT offers an advanced level certification examination. On-the-job training is often offered to experienced radiographers.
Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiographers R.T. (CV)
Cardiovascular radiographers work closely with radiologist in evaluating and treating certain diseases and use specialized x-ray equipment to study the blood vessels of the body. This fast-paced specialty requires quick thinking and a good understanding of anatomy, and experience with sophisticated x-ray equipment, computer, and patient monitoring equipment. Employers require ARRT radiographers. The ARRT offers an advanced level certification examination.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist R.T. (MR)
MRI technologist use radio waves, powerful magnets and computers to create images of the body. This is among the newest imaging modalities in the medical field. To work in this area, you must have good computer skills and a sound knowledge of human anatomy. Most employers require ARRT (R) radiographers. The ARRT offers an advanced level certification examination. This is not an entry level position and experience in radiologic technology is often required. On-the-job training is the most common form of education for MRI technologists.
Mammographers R.T. (M)
The mammographer uses x-ray energy to image the breast for interpretation and/or intervention. They exercise professional judgement, adhere to medical ethics, provide patient care, perform quality assurance testing and maintain records. Nevada law requires mammographers to possess a state license. The ARRT offers and advance certification examination. The ARRT requires 1 year experience as R.T. (R) prior to ARRT testing for mammography.
Others
The radiologic technologist may also progress to different levels of opportunity in the areas of education and management with the appropriate education and/or experience. Some technologists use their imaging experiences in sales and marketing with medical oriented businesses.
