Submission Guidelines

  • Each essay must be written by a TMCC student for an assignment in a TMCC class occurring in either the Fall 2013 or the Spring 2014 semester. (Personal pieces will not be allowed but encouraged to submit to The Meadow literary journal.)
  • The essay must meet the requirements of the instructor’s assignment and must be submitted below along with the instructor’s assignment sheet.
  • Only one submission per category will be allowed. (Multiple submissions are allowed as long as only one per category is submitted.) The categories are as follows:
    • English / Fine Arts / Humanities
    • Social Science / Business / Technology
    • Math / Science / Nursing

Contest Details

  • Deadline: April 2, 2014 by midnight.
  • Components: Students must provide the instructor’s assignment sheet (as a PDF) and their essay (as a Word document) electronically.
    • The Writing Center staff and the Student Government Association are able to help with the online submission process.
  • Format: The essay must be written in the format assigned by the instructor and that is indicated in the assignment sheet that is being submitted.
    • Your name should not appear on the essay itself (we will keep track of your essay along with your student ID).
  • Judging: Entries will be judged anonymously by faculty, staff, deans, and administrators in all departments with particular emphasis on structure and organization; thesis/focus; paragraph development and coherence; use of sources/documentation; grammar, spelling, mechanics, usage, and style; audience awareness; formatting; and overall sense of the essay.
  • Authorship: Each essay must be the work of one student and may not be the collective work of more than one student. By submitting an essay, applicants are certifying that their essay are original, authored solely by them, and that in writing their essays, they did not plagiarize or otherwise infringe upon the rights of any third parties.
  • Prizes: Three cash awards per category (First Place - $150; Second Place - $100; Third Place - $50) as well as one (1) three-credit class to the overall winning essay.

Submission Details

  • Students must submit their essay electronically as well as their instructor's assignment sheet.
  • Multiple submissions are allowed as long as only one per category is submitted.
  • Winners will be announced by email and on our website and will be recognized and rewarded at the TMCC Student Awards Ceremony.
