FTP Web Account Instructions for Students

Important: TMCC is no longer providing server space for hosting student websites. Spring 2010 is the last semester you can use and access server space. On June 30, 2010, you will not have FTP access to your files on TMCC/SCS servers.

As a TMCC student, you have access to a free TMCC e-mail account and 20 megabytes of Web server space to publish Web pages.

Steps to access your Web space via FTP

  1. Launch your FTP software (These instructions assume you are using WS FTP LE, a free FTP client for the PC. Mac users can use Fetch.).
  2. If the Session Properties window is not already open, click the Connect button.
  3. In the Session Properties window, click New to create a new profile.
  4. Under the General tab, fill out your profile.
  5. Profile Name: My FTP Account (or whatever name you want to give it)
  6. Host Name/Address: ftp.scsr.nevada.edu
(or try fallon.scsr.nevada.edu if you're unable to connect with the first choice)
  7. Host Type: Leave as Automatic detect
  8. User ID: enter your user ID. (Note: Your user ID may or may not be different from your TMCC e-mail username. To obtain your user ID, visit https://secure.tmcc.nevada.edu/swami and click "Activate My Account".)
  9. Password: enter your password. (Note: Your password may or may not be different from your TMCC e-mail password. To obtain your password, visit https://secure.tmcc.nevada.edu/swami, enter your user ID, and click "Forgot Your Password?")
  10. Leave the Account and Comment fields blank.
  11. Click Apply and OK (this will save it so next time your Profile name will appear in the drop-down window). You should now be connected!
  12. Once connected, check to see if there is a folder called "public_html" on the server. This is the folder where all your Web files should be uploaded to. If this folder does not exist, create it on the remote server. (To create a new folder using WS-FTP LE, click the MkDir button on the Remote Site. Name it "public_html" and then double click it to enter that folder. Permissions on this folder should be 755 or RWX R R. If you need additional help using WS-FTP LE, please click the software's Help button.)
  13. Upload all your Web pages to this "public_html" folder. This is very important. Any pages uploaded outside of the "public_html" folder will not be viewable online.
  14. View your website via a browser! Your URL will be http://www.tmcc.nevada.edu/~username/ (Be sure that your default document file is called index.html)

Note: If you are using an HTML editing tool like Dreamweaver or Frontpage to post your website, enter the above FTP information into the software's publishing settings, making sure that you still specify posting to the "public_html" folder.
