Veterans Upward Bound Program
TMCC Veteran of the Month - Nov. 2010
John Vaccaro
Grounds Supervisor
My name is John Vaccaro. I am originally from southern California and I moved to Reno in 1977. I worked in the casino business for 20 years as a craps dealer, box man, and pit boss. In 1997 I did a career change to work in landscaping. I began my career with TMCC in 1998 in the custodial department and transferred to the Ground department in 2002 where I am now the Supervisor for the Grounds Supervisor at TMCC.
Prior to moving to Reno I was drafted by the U.S. Army on the last day of the draft, June 30th, 1971. I did basic training at Fort Ord,Calif., and A.I.T. at Fort Gordon,Ga. I served in Vietnam in 1972 with the 551st M.P. Co. reconnaissance division, and then finished out my tour at Fort Polk, La.
My advice to returning Veterans is to take advantage of any education you can get. Utilize all available assistance from the V.A. It is there for you. The Veterans Upward Bound at TMCC. is an excellent program that helps veterans go back to school. If you are a returning combat veteran, it can be a difficult transition "back into the world". Stay close to family and friends and use your military experience as a building block for the rest of your life. To all Veterans, I thank you for your service. Welcome home.
