Veterans Upward Bound Program
The Five Habits of Successful Students
Over the years and over a thousand students, the Veterans Upward Bound staff has noted common activities that successful students share. You should develop the following habits that will increase your learning potential and will prove useful in future college coursework.
- Attendance
Attend all classes on time, ready to learn. Missing instruction results in gaps in the learning process that are difficult to fill. Contact the instructor or the VUB office if you are going to be absent from class. - Homework Assignments
Once a new skill has been presented, it is necessary to practice that skill until you are comfortable using it. Complete homework assignments and come prepared to class. - Participation
Participate in class. This provides you and the instructor a "check" for understanding and allows early correction of misunderstanding if necessary. Ask questions if you need further clarification or want more examples. If you don't ask questions, your instructor will usually assume that the material is understood and will proceed. - Communicate
Talk to your counselor and instructors if a problem arises or circumstances change that might affect your participation. We will do our best to help you stay on track with your educational goal. - Goal Persistence
Persist in pursuing your goals. Don't quit on your goals. Focus on your personal academic growth. Don't compare your progress to others. Each individual's needs are different. Discuss your progress with your instructors and counselor.
Consider developing these habits. They will contribute to your success in the Veterans Upward Bound program and they will serve you well in college. Remember, you will get as much out of this program as you are willing to put into it. And don't forget that we're your partners for success.
