After selecting the VA Educational Chapter, complete these steps.

  1. TMCC Application for Admission. Complete and submit the TMCC application for admission online or pick up an application at the Starting Point, Dandini Campus, Student Center Lobby, 7000 Dandini Blvd., Reno.

Need assistance or have questions? Contact TMCC's Admissions and Records Office.
  2. Financial Aid. Veterans may be eligible for additional financial aid. Contact the TMCC Financial Aid Office, for an application or to answer questions.
  3. ACCUPLACER Placement Test. Schedule time to take the ACCUPLACER Placement Test or bring your ACT or SAT scores to the admissions and records office.
  4. Orientation. This may be accomplished either online or by attending a scheduled presentation.
    • Receive advisement on what classes to take
    • Learn about our degree programs
    • Learn how to use the catalog and class schedule
    • Tour the campus
  5. Academic Advising. Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor or counselor, to receive more extensive degree and course information and advice on majors and long-term educational planning. If you are a veteran in vocational rehabilitation, seek counseling only if directed by your VA vocational rehabilitation counselor.
  6. Decide your educational path. Because the Department of Veterans Affairs will only pay for classes that fill graduation requirements, decide what degree program you want and document it on your application (VA Form 22-1990, question 12c for New Applicants and VA Form 22-1995, question 14 for Transfer Applicants).
  7. Check your admission status on Web-Reg, one working day after submitting your application.
  8. Register for classes! Use Web-Reg to enroll in your selected classes.

As a student you may take any class that you desire, but remember, the VA will only pay benefits for classes required by your degree program. Although the TMCC Veterans' Benefits Certifying Official attempts to verify enrollment in proper classes, you are ultimately responsible for your enrollment choices.
  9. Course Submittal Form. After selecting your classes on Web-Reg you must also submit electronically the Veteran Benefits Course Submittal Form. This is the only way that the certifying official is informed of your class selections. Do not phone the office or send an e-mail to accomplish this requirement.
  10. Transfer credit evaluation. The Department of Veterans Affairs pays only for classes required for your degree. To start a transfer credit evaluation, request your official transcripts from all previous colleges sent to the TMCC Admissions and Records Office.

When all previous education transcripts are received, veterans request a Degree Audit Report PDF icon. You may receive benefits for two semesters before transfer credits must be reported to the Department of Veteran Affairs. Failure to have official transcripts sent to TMCC will delay your VA benefits.

The VA will not pay benefits for repeating classes that you have already taken, if those classes satisfied requirements for your program. If you enroll in and receive benefits for a class, and the degree audit report shows that requirement is already fulfilled, the VA may require you to refund any benefits paid for an unnecessary class.
  11. Contact the Veterans' Educational Benefits Office, RDMT 315. After you have completed the enrollment process for TMCC you need to apply to the VA to start your educational benefits. Once you receive your "letter of eligibility" frmo the VA, bring a copy to this office, alojng with a copy of your DD 214 / DD 295 / or DD 2586. A request for your military transcripts will be faxed by this office. New applications to the VA take 6-8 weeks to be processed. Plan accordingly.
  12. Tuition and Fees — check calendar for due dates of tuition and fees. Only those veterans who select Chapter 33 will have their tuition and fees paid by the Department of Veteran Affairs. If tuition and fees are not paid by the deadline date, your classes will be purged. You are responsible for timely payment. Options are:

    • Pay tuition and any fees at the controller's office before the deadline.
    • Enter into a deferred payment agreement with controller's office.
    • Check your financial aid status on Web-Reg if you have applied and been awarded financial aid.
