New Applicant for Veterans Benefits

Choose from these definitions. Once you determine your chapter number, click on the chapter link to complete the appropriate forms.

Chapter 30
Montgomery GI Bill — Active Duty Educational Assistance Program

If you first entered active duty on/after July 1, 1985, and contributed $1200 to the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty Educational Assistance Program; or if you earned an honorable discharge at some time in your military career and your final discharge was no more than 10 years ago; or you are currently on active duty. (Please note: some service members originally entitled to chapter 32 benefits accepted the offer to convert to this category of benefits.)

Chapter 31
Vocational Rehabilitation Program

If you are making a claim for educational benefits under the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Program based on the belief that you have a service-connected disability.

Chapter 33
Post 9/11 GI Bill — Educational Assistance Program

If you entered active duty on/after September 11, 2001 and earned an honorable discharge. Tuition and fees will be paid by the VA directly to the college. The basic allowance for housing (BAH) and book/supplies stipend will be paid directly to the student. The selection of Chapter 33 education benefit is an irrevocable decision. Choose wisely.

Chapter 35
Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program

If you are the surviving spouse or dependent of a veteran/serviceperson who:

  1. died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service- connected disability. The disability must arise out of active service in the Armed Forces, or
  2. died from any cause while such a service-connected disability was in existence, or
  3. is missing in action or captured in line of duty by hostile forces, or
  4. is forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government of power.

Montgomery GI Bill — Selected Reserve Educational Program

If you are currently actively serving in a component of the selected reserve (Reserve or National Guard).

Chapter 1607
Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

If you are currently actively serving in a component of the selected reserve (Reserve or National Guard). Contact the Veterans Educational Benefits office for further information.
