Student Activities and Leadership

Student Leadership Development Program

The student leadership development program is based on the social change model of leadership developed by members of the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. Workshops provided will enhance the learning environment and connect students with the college and community. The program is inclusive and accessible for students and promotes student learning and development that is purposeful and holistic. In addition, the student leadership development program provides skills to assist students both in and out of the classroom.

The program consists of five (5) core courses to provide a foundation for students. The skills workshops provide students with the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. The approach is holistic and provides student with skills to use throughout their lifetime.

Each course or workshop has a set of objectives to be measured through a short post-test at the end of each workshop. No outside work will be required from the students. Facilitators are staff members from TMCC, UNR, and outside agencies.

There is not a specified timeframe to complete the program. Students may attend the workshops at their leisure. Students attending all five (5) core courses and a minimum of five (5) skills workshops will receive a student leadership development program certificate at the student leader ceremony each May. The core courses and skills workshops will be offered at various times throughout the year. Additionally, leadership training will be offered as needed to various student groups on campus.
