What is SGA/Student Government?

The Student Government Association (SGA) of Truckee Meadows Community College is the student government organization. The SGA Officers and SGA Senators are elected every spring semester or are appointed by the current student government members to fill vacancies.

The elected positions are:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Seven elected Senators

  • Enhancing student life
  • Hosting programs
  • Sponsoring community service events on campus
  • Making recommendations and contributing opinions and information to the college, the system, and Board of Regents regarding student concerns
  • Provides support to the student clubs and organizations on campus

What are the benefits of joining student government?

Student government is excellent leadership training. A term as a student government representative may greatly enhance your academic and professional resume. Being a member of the student government is a great opportunity to meet new people and make long lasting relationships with a diverse group of students. Finally, all student government officers are eligible for a stipend. Executive Officers receive $4000, the Activities Chair receives $2400, and Senators receive $1920 per fiscal year.

How do I join the SGA?

Any student at TMCC is eligible to run for election to the SGA as long as they meet the following the requirements:

Executive Officers

  • Must have completed a minimum of 6 credits at TMCC and been enrolled at TMCC during the academic semester prior to the election;
  • Must be taking a minimum of 6 credit hours in the current academic semester and each semester while in office;
  • Possess and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25;
  • Must be in good standing with TMCC. Good standing is defined as not serving any disciplinary sanctions outlined in the NSHE Code (Title 2, Chapter 6).

Can part-time students become SGA members?

Part-time students can be members as long as they have met the eligibility requirements.

How do I get involved with SGA?

  • The best way to get involved is to attend SGA programs, activities and meetings. View the TMCC Events Calendar for upcoming SGA events.
  • If you are interested in elected or appointed positions within the SGA, please read the SGA elections procedures.
  • If you'd like to be actively involved with campus life, join one of the many active clubs/organizations on campus.
  • Additionally, SGA always needs program volunteers. If this interests you, please contact us.

What programs does the SGA implement?

Some of the many events that SGA is involved with and/or organizes:

Social Programs:

  • Welcome BBQ in September
  • Fall Festival in October
  • Winter Holiday program in December
  • Graduation Reception in May
  • Spring Fling in May

Community Service Programs:

  • Semi-annual blood drives
  • Food baskets to TMCC students
  • Membership drive for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Nevada
  • Student scholarship contributions

How can my SGA club/organization borrow resources (such as a popcorn machine, coffee brewer, etc.) for our event?

If an SGA-recognized club/organization would like to borrow resources, such as the popcorn machine, coffee brewer, coffee dispenser, cash box, dry erase board, or ice chest, please complete the SGA Resource Request form at least two weeks before the event to have it be considered by the SGA.

How can my SGA club/organization get our own email address?

A club may request a email address by contacting the TMCC Help Desk.

How can my SGA club/organization set up a TMCC website?

How can my student club get an SGA mailbox?

Having your own SGA club/organization mailbox will allow you to have mail sent to your club/organization without an officer or member giving out personal addresses.

Mailboxes are assigned each year. Mailboxes are in RDMT 122. Contact us for more information.

How do I start my own club at TMCC?

TMCC students who have similar interests are encouraged to form and/or join student clubs/organizations in an effort to advance their common goals and interests.

How does my SGA club/organization get an email listserv?

An email listserv is a great way to communicate with a group of people. The SGA has two email listservs available: one for club and organizations and one for club and organization advisors.

Sign up for the SGA Club and Org (SGACLUBS-L) or Advisor Listserv (SGACLUBADVISORS-L) or you may set up your own.

What are some marketing tools available to my SGA club/organization?

Public Information Office (PIO): A great resource your student club/organization has is access to PIO. They can assist in collaborating with you to identify ways to market your club/organization’s existence on campus or take professional photographs of your student club/organization officers, members, and events.

TMCC Website Home Page Banner/Scroller: Send a headline and link to PIO to appear on TMCC's home page.

TMCC's Events Calendar: TMCC’s online events calendar is the central location for all of TMCC’s events from academic and official dates to student club/organization activities. You can submit your club/organization’s events and meetings in advance and even access upcoming events via RSS feeds and automatic reminders.

TMCC This Month e-Newsletter: Send announcement text to PIO by the 25th of the month. The newsletter is sent to all students via email on the first of the month.

What is the process for a TMCC student club to schedule a room for an activity or event?

Visit the Student Government Association (SGA) website for more information on how SGA-recognized student clubs can schedule TMCC rooms for on-campus events.

When are SGA club/organization trainings?

Club/organization trainings will be held in the beginning of each semester. To retain recognition, it is mandatory for the club/organization executive board members (president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary) and club Advisor to attend requested trainings.

Club/organization training information will be sent out via the club/organization listserv and the club/organization Facebook page.
