Student Government Association (SGA) of Truckee Meadows Community College is the student government organization at TMCC.

What is SGA/Student Government? back to top

The Student Government Association (SGA) of Truckee Meadows Community College is the student government organization. The SGA Officers and SGA Senators are elected every spring semester or are appointed by the current student government members to fill vacancies.

The elected positions are:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Seven elected Senators

The student government is responsible for:

  • Enhancing student life
  • Hosting programs
  • Sponsoring community service events on campus
  • Making recommendations and contributing opinions and information to the college, the system, and Board of Regents regarding student concerns
  • Provides support to the student clubs and organizations on campus

When does SGA meet? back to top

The Student Government Association meets every other Wednesday during the academic year 3:30-5:30 p.m. in RDMT, room 115. Please check the TMCC student organizations and clubs calendar for the current meeting dates.

How do I get involved? back to top

The best way to get involved is to attend SGA programs, activities and meetings. If you are interested in elected or appointed positions within the SGA, please read the section on joining the student government. If you want to be actively involved with campus life, join one of the many active clubs/organizations on campus. Additionally, the student government always needs program volunteers. If this interests you, please contact a member of the student government for program information.

How do I join the SGA? back to top

Any student at TMCC is eligible to run for election to the SGA as long as they meet the following the requirements:

Executive Officers

  • Must have completed a minimum of six (6) credits at TMCC and been enrolled at TMCC during the academic semester prior to the election;
  • Must be taking a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the current academic semester and each semester while in office;
  • Posses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25;
  • Be in good standing with TMCC. Good standing is defined as not serving any disciplinary sanctions outlined in the NSHE Code (Title 2, Chapter 6).

Senators

  • Must be taking a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the current academic semester and each semester while in office;
  • Posses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25;
  • Be in good standing with TMCC. Good standing is defined as not serving any disciplinary sanctions outlined in the NSHE Code, Title 2, Chapter 6.

Any student meeting these requirements may fill out an Elections Packet and submit it to the Student Activities and Leadership Coordinator. Students completing the packet will be eligible to run for election during the fall semester.

All officially recognized student clubs/organizations are allowed one appointed club representative. Please see your club president or advisor for more details.

From time to time the student government has vacant positions waiting to be filled. Any student may be appointed fill vacant positions if they meet the requirements above. For more information please contact the student government advisor or the Student Activities and Leadership Coordinator in RDMT 115.

What is expected of a student government officer? back to top

Executive Officers are required to work 15 hours per week and Senators are required to work eight (8) hours per week. These hours include office hours, attending student government meetings and other college meetings as well as planning and implementing programs on campus.

What are the benefits of joining student government? back to top

Student government is excellent leadership training. A term as a student government representative may greatly enhance your academic and professional resume. Being a member of the student government is a great opportunity to meet new people and make long lasting relationships with a diverse group of students. Finally, all student government officers are eligible for a monthly stipend. Executive Officers receive $500 and Senators receive $187.50 per month.
