Student Government Association Elections

Overview (Rules and Regulations)

Please read this information carefully as you will be held responsible for everything contained within. Also remember that as a candidate you are responsible for the actions of anyone campaigning on your behalf, so make sure that all of your campaign staff is familiar with this information. If you have any questions regarding this material, please ask before campaigning begins. During the entire elections process, the current SGA Elected Officials in RDMT 122, and the SGA Advisors in RDMT 122 A, should remain your source for clarification of questions, issues, etc. Please make copies of all paperwork submitted for your records.

Student Government Elected Officials must be committed to working for all TMCC students. Obviously, you will have to devote a great deal of time to the task ahead. The hours outlined below include: office hours, committee assignments, special events, and other activities that are assigned by other Student Government Elected Officials and the SGA Advisors. Along with the necessary time commitments, Student Government Elected Officials need to be motivated toward improving campus life for all students. The campus community looks to the Student Government Elected Officials for guidance and expects the Student Government Elected Officials to be dynamic student leaders who are willing to act with integrity, honesty and to lead by example. Once elected to office, you need to be prepared to jump right in and get started in your new role as a student leader. If elected, SGA Elected Officials need to provide specific documentation for student employment.

Important Dates

  • Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. - Filing deadline for candidates. No late applications will be accepted.
  • March 7 by 5 p.m. - Candidates will be informed of their filing status by the SGA Adviser and/or SGA Executive Committee.
  • March 21-April 15 - Campaigning period.
  • March 19 at 5 p.m. - Last day to withdraw from the election by signing a withdrawal statement listed on the election application.
  • April 11 - April 15 - Elections will take place online.
  • April 11-22 – Tally and announcement of new SGA Elected Officials.
  • April 27 – SGA Orientation
  • April 27-May 10 - New SGA members transition period
  • May 5 or May 22. Time and location TBD - Installation Ceremony- The SGA Student Government will meet for an installation ceremony. At this ceremony the official oath of office will be taken by the newly elected members to their positions. Be ready to assume all responsibilities and leadership of SGA at this time!
  • April 27- May 10 - Leadership training. Exact dates and times will be determined after the elections.
  • May 11 - First General Assembly Meeting conducted by new officers. General Assembly meetings will take place on Wednesday afternoons, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. in RDMT 115.
  • June 16-17 - Board of Regents meeting at UNR
  • Summer Training - The SGA will develop the agendas for these meetings and correspond regularly with other members of student government so that all members can plan their schedules accordingly.

Filing/Campaigning

  • In order to run for SGA office, you must file an official application for that office. Filing states that you agree to have your name appear on the ballot. In order to file, you need to fill out the online application.
  • All candidates must comply with campus policies and procedures to post or distribute literature on campus. If you wish to post fliers, you must have them approved through the Information Desk (RDMT 315). A candidate may only place one flier (up to 11 x 17 inches) per bulletin board.

    NOTE: Bulletin boards marked "departmental use only" may not be used for campaign postings. Campaign materials may not be placed on walls, windows or in the art galleries. All campaign materials require a visible phone number. You may use the Student Government Association telephone number. All campaign literature must be in support of an individual candidate. Negative campaigning is not allowed.

Student Government Positions

Executive Officer Roles and Responsibilities

President
  • Act as the voice of the SGA to agencies, offices, departments, and individuals external to the Student Government Association;
  • Preside at meetings of the SGA General Assembly, both regular and special;
  • Preside at meetings of the SGA Executive Board, both regular and special;
  • Serve as the SGA representative to the TMCC Faculty Senate;
  • Serve as the SGA representative to the NSHE Board of Regents;
  • Represent the student body as requested by the SGA;
  • Perform other duties as prescribed by the SGA Constitution and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the SGA.
Vice President
  • Preside at meetings of the SGA in the absence of the President;
  • Serve as Parliamentarian;
  • Serves as the SGA representative to the TMCC Planning and Budget Council;
  • Chair the Operations Committee;
  • Furnish to SGA committees the documents required for the performance of their duties, and have available at each General Assembly meeting a list of existing committees and their members;
  • Maintain a record of the events and activities presented by the SGA;
  • Perform other duties as prescribed by the SGA Constitution and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the SGA;
  • Prepare and post the approved agenda for the Operations Committee meetings in compliance with Nevada Open Meeting Law.
Treasurer
  • Serve as the SGA representative to the TMCC Academic Standards Committee;
  • Oversee the collection and distribution of the SGA funds and render a monthly written report to the SGA;
  • Submit a yearly budget for adoption by the SGA at such times as the SGA directs;
  • Update and publish as needed a Financial Procedural Manual for use by the TMCC student organizations;
  • Chair the Finance Committee;
  • Perform other duties as prescribed by the SGA Constitution and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the SGA;
  • Prepare and post the approved agenda for the Finance Committee meetings in compliance with Nevada Open Meeting Law.
Secretary
  • Prepare and post the approved agenda for Executive Board, General Assembly, and the Activities Committee meetings in compliance with Nevada Open Meeting Law;
  • Serve as the SGA representative to the TMCC Web Advisory Committee;
  • Keep the official membership and call the roll when required;
  • Make minutes, records, and reports available to members and the community as required by Nevada Open Meeting law;
  • Chair the Activities Committee;
  • Notify Executive Officers and Senators of the election or appointment;
  • Send out to the membership a notice of each meeting and conduct the general correspondence of the SGA;
  • Perform other duties as prescribed by the SGA Constitution and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the SGA.

Senator Roles and Responsibilities

The elected/appointed senators are responsible for the following:

  • Serve regular office hours as identified in the SGA bylaws;
  • Attend regular and special meetings of the SGA;
  • Serve on at least two (2) SGA standing or special committees;
  • Perform other duties as requested by the SGA.

Time Commitment

SGA Executive Officers:

A minimum of fifteen office hours per week (including but not limited to):

  • Front receptionist desk
  • Attendance and active participation in standing student government committee meetings and activities
  • Representing the student government at other college meetings
  • Monthly meetings with the student government adviser

SGA Senators:

A minimum of eight office hours per week (including but not limited to):

  • Front receptionist desk
  • Attendance and active participation in standing student government committee meetings and activities
  • Post student government notices and maintain the bulletin boards, soliciting student opinions and concerns, marketing, advertisement and endorsement of all student government activities

Compensation

SGA Executive Officers

  • $500 at the end of each month (September - December) and (February - May)

SGA Senators

  • $187.50 at the end of each month (September - December) and (February - May)

Failure to satisfactorily perform all duties as an Executive Officer or Senator may result in a reduction in pay, or a complete withholding of pay until the Executive Officer or Senator resumes satisfactory position performance.

Eligibility and Conditions for Candidacy and Holding Office

Executive Officers

  • Must have completed a minimum of six (6) credits at TMCC and been enrolled at TMCC during the academic semester prior to the election;
  • Must be taking a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the current academic semester and each semester while in office;
  • Posses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25;
  • Be in good standing with TMCC. Good standing is defined as not serving any disciplinary sanctions outlined in the NSHE Code (Title 2, Chapter 6).

Senators

  • Must be taking a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the current academic semester and each semester while in office;
  • Posses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25;
  • Be in good standing with TMCC. Good standing is defined as not serving any disciplinary sanctions outlined in the NSHE Code, Title 2, Chapter 6.
