A Road Map for Success
Attend classes
Attend classes, on time. Sit close to the front of the class. If you have to miss class, be sure to get assignments and notes. Know the class attendance policy.
Bring supplies
Make sure you bring the necessary supplies such as paper and pencil to class.
Keep your syllabus
Your instructor will provide a syllabus on the first day of class. Read and know it well as it explains the course requirements.
Pay attention
Even if you become bored, listen, participate and ask questions.
Communicate with your instructor
Locate your instructor's office. Ask questions (in the classroom, by email and by phone). Visit your instructor during office hours. Show that you are making an effort to understand the material. Talk to your instructor – especially if you do not understand something or miss a class. Monitor your grade status.
Prepare
Read your assignments before class. Check your syllabus often for assignments and important due dates.
Take notes
Listen, date each entry and write legibly. Outline your notes and create your own abbreviation system. Write down key words. Review your notes to flush out missed information within 24 hours of your class period ending.
Do your homework
Give yourself adequate time to complete your assignments. Use the Tutoring and Learning Center to review your assignment and papers. Turn it all in. Make sure it looks neat and is well written.
Manage time
Managing your time is essential to your success. Use a monthly planner to record your academic and personal commitments. Focus your attention on your goals. Avoid the pitfalls of procrastination. Find the right balance between your life's commitments.
Set measurable goals
Advisors and counselors are available to help you develop your academic, career, and personal goals. Break down your long term goals into a lot of doable steps.
Develop a success driven attitude
Make a commitment to meet new students. Consider joining a club or activity. Know that your success at TMCC depends on your attitude and how you handle change and new experiences. Register for an EPY 101, a class designed to assist new students in career development, time management and study skills. Connect with the many college services and resources available to help you realize your academic goals and dreams.
Utilize student technology
Forgot your username and/or password? Retrieve your username and/or password online. Safeguard your password, don't share it with others or write down your password carelessly. Use the general access computer labs on campus to do your homework or check your college communications.
Learn how to study
Review your notes daily. Read your textbook materials to pull out key words, main ideas and possible exam questions. Give yourself three hours of study for every one hour in class. Form a study group and study on campus instead of leaving as soon as your class ends. Check out the free tutoring available to students. Study when you are most alert.
Take a test
Arrive early. Stay calm and relaxed. Maintain a positive attitude. Monitor your time; don't spend too much time on one question. Make note of the questions you are not sure of and return back to them to check your work.
Keep this tip on your dashboard
Enjoy the journey. Meet new people. Connect with the college's staff and instructors. Focus your attention on your goals and dreams and take purposeful actions to make them a reality. TMCC is committed to your student success, academic goals and graduation.
