Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course is an occupational preparatory program offered by the TMCC Sciences Division. Students completing the Nursing Assistant course will be prepared to assist the professional nurse in direct client care, undertaking those tasks which are supportive to the care of the stable client.

This course meets the Nevada State Board of Nursing eligibility requirements to take the written and manual skills Nursing Assistant exams. Enrollment is open to the general community.

Note: Before registering for NURS 130, students must complete a background check, drug screen, and provide proof of CPR Certification as a Healthcare Provider, major medical insurance coverage, and immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, varicella (chicken pox), influenza and a negative TB state.


Students who attend CNA classes follow the fee schedule and refund policy described in the current TMCC college catalog. These costs are subject to change.

Pre-Registration Requirements

Note: you will not be allowed to enroll in this program until all requirements listed below are met.

  1. Background Check (good for 1 year). Instructions:
    • Go to

    • Complete required fields, then "continue" to enter payment information.
    • Print receipt.
    • Cost: $49.50.
  2. Submit Receipt: Bring receipt to RDMT 417
  3. Drug Screen (good for 1 year). Instructions:
    • Go to
    • Click on "Order Now", "Students", and enter Package Code: TR36.
    • Cost: $55.00 (includes drug screen and immunization tracking/document management; see #4 below).
  4. Immunizations and other requirementsInstructions:
    • Go to www.certifiedbackground.comand upload documents.
      • Major Medical Insurance Coverage for the class term
      • CPR card: American Heart Association Health Care Provider or Red Cross Professional Rescuer
      • Tetanus, Diphtheria Pertussis Immunity — DPT or Dtap or TDaP within 10 years
      • Two negative TB tests within 1 year (one week apart is admissible)
      • Hepatitis B (series of three, one must be completed)
      • Two MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
      • Varicella Immunity (series of two immunizations or documented history from physician)
      • Influenza vaccine in flu season
    • Cost: $20; included in $55.00 total cost.
  5. Contact the Certified Nursing Assistant Program at 775-673-7117. If documents are complete, you will be released to register within 24 hours.
  6. Register for class(es).

Procedures for CNA Testing

When the CNA Course has been completed successfully, candidates wishing to take the state Written/Manual Skills test for Certified Nursing Assistant must complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an Application for Initial CNA Certificate to the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN). The NSBN will place qualified individuals on an eligibility list. Make appointment for fingerprint completion at the state board office ($50.00) or submit two completed fingerprint cards with $51.25 to NSBN.
  2. Submit a Testing Registration Form to TMCC, Health Science Department (RDMT 417). The NSBN furnishes the list of eligible candidates to TMCC. Applicant's name must appear on the NSBN eligibility list in order to be scheduled. Certification tests are scheduled monthly.

Testing Costs

  • State Written/Manual Skills (testing fees paid to Board of Regents) = $120.00
  • State Board of Nursing Application Fees = $50.00
  • Fingerprint Processing AT the State Board = $50.00

Candidates should submit professional documentation of the disability with their application to help determine the necessary testing arrangements. Thirty days' advance notice is required for all testing arrangements. There is no additional charge for these accommodations.

English as a Second Language (ESL) accommodation: The Nevada Nursing Assistant Competency Exam is administered in English only. Translators are not permitted and translation dictionaries may not be used during the exam. ESL candidates should review the "Oral Test" section to determine if this might be an option for them.
