TMCC to Host Day on the Hill Event for Middle School Students

Truckee Meadows Community College will host a middle school Day on the Hill college informational event on Friday, March 19, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the college’s Dandini Campus, Sierra Building, room 108.

This event is designed to provide college information to low-income, first-generation and under-represented seventh grade students. Space is limited; 12 students per each Washoe County School District high school may attend. Students who are interested should contact their high school counselor to sign up. Transportation and lunch will be provided.

During the event, students will hear a College is Possible presentation, take a campus tour, and ask questions of a TMCC student panel. A follow-up meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 6 p.m. at TMCC Meadowood Center, room 206. Sessions will be held in English and Spanish.

The event is sponsored by TMCC Access, Outreach and Recruitment Office and the WCSD Diversity Office.

TMCC Students Provide Free Dental Exams

Recently TMCC Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students volunteered their time and expertise to provide free dental hygiene care to 26 uninsured children of TMCC students.

On Feb. 20, 2010, TMCC students provided each child with a check-up X-Ray, exam, dental cleaning with fluoride treatment, sealant and referral if needed to dentists for dental concerns. Each child also received a free toothbrush, dental floss, a two-minute tooth brushing timer, stickers and instructions on how to care for their teeth to help prevent cavities.

A total of $995 in dental care was donated to a population of children who might not otherwise get care (based on TMCC dental hygiene fees). Many of the supplies used were obtained from a TMCC Foundation Grant or from the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile Grant.

Lighter Than Air Competition

TMCC to Host Lighter than Air Competition

Truckee Meadows Community College will host a lighter than air (LTA) competition on April 8, 11 a.m. at the college’s Dandini Campus in the student center.

This program, made possible by a Nevada NASA Space Grant Consortium, was written by TMCC Professor Dan Loranz and is designed to provide added benefits to students in the form of hands-on learning.

The college is currently looking for teams to participate in this event. Each team may consist of up to six TMCC students, and only a limited number of teams may participate. Most of the supplies will be provided through the grant.

Each team will design, build and fly radio-controlled lighter than air vehicles and complete in timed trials. Each member of the winning team will be awarded a TMCC scholarship for the 2010/2011 academic year.

TMCC Not Closing Due to Budget

Truckee Meadows Community College is open and has no plans to close now or in the future. In reality, student enrollment has increased 8% for the spring 2010 semester, and TMCC remains committed to student access and success.

Scenarios reported in recent news media were designed to illustrate the magnitude of the proposed reductions in the higher education budget, but were not presented as an action plan. TMCC does not know the extent of the budget cut now. The college will have additional information after the State of Nevada Special Legislative Session that begins on February 23 and the Board of Regents meetings on March 4 and 5.

TMCC Announces Dean’s List for Fall 2009

Truckee Meadows Community College is pleased to announce that 711 students have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or above for the fall 2009 semester and have been named to the college’s Dean’s List.

Any full-time student who takes 12 credits in a single term, or a part-time student who takes 12 credits in any two consecutive terms (six credits per term) may qualify for the list. The highest GPA a student can earn is 4.0.

Spring 2010 Performing Arts Season Announced

TMCC Announces Spring Performing Arts Schedule

The Truckee Meadows Community College performing arts department is pleased to announce the spring 2010 season with theater performances and music productions.

Theater Performances
The college will present the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with music by William Finn and based on the book by Rachel Sheinkin. Performance dates are: Feb. 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., March 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 at 7:30 p.m., and March 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. at the TMCC Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $17 general, $12 students and seniors, and $10 TMCC students and are available at www.Showtix4u.com or by calling 775-789-5671.

David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross will be performed with special permission directly from Mr. Mamet to TMCC. This production will feature two casts: One all men and one all women. In the final weekend there will be two mixed gender performances. Performance dates are April 23, 24, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m., April 25 and May 2 at 2 p.m., and May 1, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the TMCC Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center. Music Productions
The TMCC Concert Choir will perform on May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the TMCC Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

The TMCC Concert Band will perform on March 2 and May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Reno High School Booth Theater. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

The TMCC Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center (RPAC) is located at 505 Keystone Ave. in Reno. Tickets for performances will be sold at the door prior to each performance.
