College Attains NC-SARA Status

Posted: Aug 5, 2014

Truckee Meadows Community College has been approved for the postsecondary online education initiative by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), and is one of the first three SARA institutions in Nevada, along with College of Southern Nevada and Great Basin College.

“TMCC's recognition as a SARA participant is a tribute to our commitment to offering quality distance education for all students,” said Dr. Jane Nichols, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “This reduces our administrative costs by our not having to seek authorization in each individual state where our students reside and guarantees our students a quality educational experience and a clear feedback process.”

SARA is a nationwide coordinating body for member states and approved institutions to establish national standards of practice for college-level online education, and to create greater accessibility and continuity for students who take courses based at an institution in a different state from where they live.

Some of the reasons that SARA was formed include:

  • States have varying requirements for out-of-state colleges offering online classes to residents
  • Distance education is rapidly expanding
  • Colleges offering online courses need to obtain regulatory information in 54 states/territories

The state-level reciprocity process that SARA creates will make it more efficient and uniform for colleges to improve the quality of online education, and reduce costs so that institutions can pass the savings on to students. Colleges participating in the initiative will implement a standard of best practices called the Interregional Guidelines for the Evaluation of Distance Education Programs (Online Learning).

“Your institution is listed on our website ( and we encourage you to inform students of your participation,” wrote Marshall Hill, Executive Director of NC-SARA in a letter to TMCC.

SARA is administered by four regional agencies; the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, Midwestern Higher Education Compact, New England Board of Higher Education, and the Southern Regional Education Board.

Once a state joins SARA, its institutions may apply. Accredited colleges are eligible for SARA participation. TMCC is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.
