Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is announcing ongoing enrollment for veterans who would like to continue their schooling or attend college for the first time. Special emphasis is being placed on reaching out to the over 11,000 American veterans in the rural communities of Lyon, Storey, and Churchill counties.
Veterans Upward Bound has been active in northern Nevada since 1989, and has helped over 3,000 local veterans prepare for, enroll, and succeed in college. Based at the TMCC Meadowood Center in Reno, Veterans Upward Bound is a TRIO Grant program, and receives funding through the U.S. Department of Education. To qualify for VUB services, veterans must be low income or first generation college students.
Veterans Upward Bound helps veterans meet their educational and career goals by offering free college placement testing and preparation, math and English refresher courses, academic advising, and enrollment assistance. Program participants are assisted with accessing their VA education benefits and navigating the college enrollment process. VUB is designed to make the transition back to school as seamless as possible for those who have served in the military.
Though sponsored by Truckee Meadows Community College, Veterans Upward Bound is designed to assist veterans in preparing for success at any college of their choice, including online and distance education programs. To better serve the veterans, appointments and services can be scheduled in the rural communities, minimizing travel time and cost.
Veterans Upward Bound will be highlighting its services to the community as a featured presenter at the Healthy Communities Coalition meeting at the Silver Springs Community Center on Friday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. Interested veterans are encouraged to contact Veterans Upward Bound at 775-829-9007 for more information.
