TMCC student takes gold at Central American Games in Costa Rica

Posted: Mar 14, 2013

Earlier this month, TMCC student Joaquin Tobar and his wife Eileen Grench won gold medals in the Saber Fencing event at the Central American Games in Costa Rica. This win launches both athletes to the Olympic quad training and competition schedule for the 2016 games. Both Tobar and Grench train with local fencing coach Eric Momberg, owner and director of High Desert Fencing Alliance located in Reno. The Central American Games are the longest running multi-sport, international event with the exception of the Olympics.

This weekend, Reno will play host to the North American Cup run by the United States Fencing Association (USFA). Thousands of athletes will visit northern Nevada March 15-18 for this national competition where Tobar and Grench will coach Reno fencers participating in the event.

Visit the North American Cup website for more information, including a complete schedule.
