National representatives of Phi Theta Kappa visited TMCC in early December to showcase members of our Alpha Pi Gamma chapter.  Three community colleges were chosen this year to serve as models for PTK Marketplace apparel as seen on the national PTK website.  A photographer and director of Marketplace were in town in early December, staging photos with students modeling PTK apparel such as logo shirts, jackets and backpacks.  Photos will appear on the national PTK website and social media in the early spring.

“PTK, as a team, works very hard to accomplish its mission, and it was awesome to be chosen in recognition of our accomplishments.  We are proud to represent PTK on an international level,” says Ryan Gerchman, PTK Vice President of Service. “The representatives were very impressed with our location and the beauty of our campus and surrounding mountains.”

"I am so proud of the efforts of our chapter members.  Thanks to our chapter members’ Five Star efforts, National Headquarters selected us and other national chapters to be showcased in regard to what makes a successful Phi Theta Kappa chapter," says faculty advisor Neil Siegel, acting director of TMCC’s Elizabeth Sturm Library.  “One cannot thank our students enough for their dedication to service, scholarship, leadership and fellowship."  The chapter achieved the prestigious Five Star Status in 2012-13, which is presented to chapters who fulfill service goals and college projects, conduct events, and have distinguished leadership.

With the national representatives looking on, ten members of PTK also participated in a service project for We Care Volunteers, distributing a hot meal to impoverished citizens in downtown Reno.  PTK members participate in service projects at least once a month, with other recent projects including serving food at the Marvin Piccollo Spaghetti Dinner, and preparing a garden for planting at Project Solutions.  Planning is currently underway for this year’s college project: a mentor program.  More information on the mentoring program will be available to students in the spring.

PTK President Racine “Ray” Hugo invites students to membership.  “We concentrate on leadership, scholarship, and fellowship; all while maintaining a high GPA,” says Hugo.  “I suggest all students to come join our chapter, even just to join our meetings and fellowship events because I am sure that TMCC's very own PTK chapter, Alpha Pi Gamma, can help other students feel at home and welcomed.”  Students interested in joining PTK must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, with 12 credits of 100-level courses completed.  PTK sends letters to all students who meet these requirements, and more information is available online.
