Nevadaworks, utilizing US Department of Labor Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding, awarded two competitive grants to TMCC personnel for FY13, totaling over $340,000. As with many WIA awards, the goal is to increase the employability of low-income individuals through workforce development training and job preparation.
$84,815.03 was awarded to fully support the training of a cohort of six WIA Adult students in the established Dental Assisting program. This grant funded project was developed by Dental Assisting Coordinator Julie Muhle, and upon completion of this full-time, ten-month academic program, students will earn a certificate of completion and are eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board examination to become a Certified Dental Assistant and seek employment in the dental health field.
Geothermal Plant Operator Training Program
$262,916 was awarded to advance the existing Geothermal Plant Operator Program, namely to recruit and retain typically underrepresented populations. This grant was developed and the project managed by Principal Investigator Norma Velasquez-Bryant. Students will receive scholarships, supplies, and be placed in internships as part of this WIA funded program, and by the end of the grant term, up to 20 WIA eligible individuals will be trained and certified to work in Nevada's growing geothermal power industry.
