Truckee Meadows Community College will hold the 2010 Celebration of Tenure event on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the college’s Dandini Campus, Sierra Building, room 108.
This annual event will recognize TMCC’s newly tenured faculty members, as approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents last month.
TMCC professors who have earned tenure are: Jody Covert, health sciences and safety; Kristen Demay, counseling; Gregory Ellis, computer technologies; Paula Farrenkopf, mathematics; Joseph Gonzalez, Ph.D., history, political science and law; Michael Holmes, applied industrial technology; Natalie Russell, English; Steve Schenk, biology; Henry Sosnowski, English; and Lindsay Wilson, English.
In the present day, academic tenure has come to mean the freedom from fear of retribution or loss of job for capricious or arbitrary reasons. It has led to the concept of academic freedom in higher education. The term implies that as a tenured professor, one holds the knowledge of the ages - knowledge handed down from generation to generation, expanded upon with each passing generation.
TMCC is a comprehensive community college located in Reno, Nevada. The college serves more than 13,000 students each semester in 50 degree and certificate programs, and an additional 10,000 students annually in non-credit classes.
