Registration Policies for Math Courses
Qualifications
- Testing: TMCC uses the ACCUPLACER test for initial placement qualification. A student may qualify for a specific Math course by achieving a score within a specified range on this test. The initial test is free. Subsequent re-tests cost $10.00 per test with a three week waiting period. ACCUPLACER is for initial placement only. Once a student has begun the Math sequence, ACCUPLACER may not be re-taken by a student until it has been two or more years since the student successfully completed a Math course. An Accuplacer score is valid for no more than two years. Call testing services for testing information.
- ACT/SAT Scores: ACT and SAT scores may be used for qualification for Math courses at TMCC provided these scores are no more than two years old.
- Matriculation: A student may qualify for a specific Math course by having completed the pre-requisite course with a C grade or higher at TMCC, within the NSHE or through an equivalent course at another college, within two years of the semester in which they seek to qualify. Courses taken at a college outside the NSHE must have approval of the Mathematics department chair. See "Administrative over-ride" below for details.
Enrollment
- Web-Registration: A TMCC student may enroll in a Math course for the current academic semester by using the web registration system, provided at least one of the qualifications listed above is on file with admissions and records at TMCC. Once registration is opened for the next academic semester, students may enroll for the next class in sequence provided the student is currently enrolled in the pre-requisite class during the current academic semester. Students who do not successfully complete the pre-requisite course, will be administratively withdrawn from the next course in sequence prior to the beginning of classes for the next academic semester.
- Administrative over-ride: A student may over-ride the pre-requisite or placement test requirements by receiving an "Administrative Over-ride" from the math department. These are used when a student meets qualifications, but does not have them on file with admissions and records at TMCC. Please deliver, mail, e-mail or fax a copy of an official or un-official transcript showing the course taken, grade and date of completion. Also, include a course description for the course, (or courses), you would like considered for pre-requisite purposes and a cover letter indicating what course, (or courses), you want an over-ride for. ACCUPLACER results from other colleges and SAT/ACT scores are also accepted in this manner, provided they are no more than two years old.
- Permit to Enroll: A student may enroll in a math class by using a "Permit to Enroll" form. This form is used after the web registration system shuts down for enrollment each semester. The form is available from the math department Office. It must be signed by the department chair.
Class Sizes
- Increases: Class sizes will not be increased to accommodate particular students except in extreme circumstances of institutional error or exceptional student hardship.
- Full classes: Once a class is full, no further enrollment will occur into that class until a student drops or is purged to make a spot available. Individual faculty members are not allowed to enroll students into their classes when spots become available. A student must either enroll him/herself by using the web-registration system or by a "Permit to Enroll" form from the math department. The math department does not have "Wait Lists" so enrollment is done on a first come, first served basis.
Enrollment Deadlines
- Lecture Sections: A student must be enrolled in a lecture section of a Math course with enough instructional time remaining in a semester to justify the credit hour value of the course. For sections of a three credit-hour course that meets twice per week for one hour and fifteen minutes, a student must be on the official class roster and attend class on or before the third class session. The enrollment deadline for other sections depends on the length of a class period.
- Individualized Instruction Courses (Both Traditional and Computer Assisted): In situations of enrollment past the termination date of the web registration system, a student may be enrolled during the first three weeks of a fall or spring with the approval of the department chair. After the first three weeks of the semester, the course instructor's approval is required as well. It is the student's responsibility to make sure all requirements for the course are met.
- Web-based: A student must be enrolled in a web-based class by the end of the second week of classes. A student may be enrolled after this date to the middle of a semester with approval of the department chair and the course instructor.
