Registration Policies for Math Courses
Qualifications
- Testing: TMCC uses the ACCUPLACER test for initial placement qualification. A student may qualify for a specific math course by achieving a score within a specified range on this test. The initial test is free. Subsequent re-tests cost $10.00 per test. ACCUPLACER is for initial placement only. Once a student has begun the math sequence, ACCUPLACER may not be re-taken until it has been more than two years since the last successful math class attempt. An ACCUPLACER score is valid for placement for at most two years. Call 775-763-8240 for testing information.
- ACT/SAT Scores: ACT and SAT scores may be used for qualification for math courses at TMCC provided these scores are at most two years old.
- Matriculation: All courses except Math 091 and Math 090 require a pre-requisite. A student may qualify for a specific math course by having successfully completed the pre-requisite course at TMCC, within the NSHE or through an equivalent course at another college, within two years of the semester in which they seek to qualify. Courses taken at college outside the NSHE must have approval of the Mathematics Department Chair.
Enrollment
- Web-Registration: A TMCC student may enroll in a math class by using the web registration system provided they have a qualifying placement test score or pre-requisite grade on file with TMCC. Students may also enroll for the next academic semester provided the student is currently enrolled in the pre-requisite class during the current academic semester.
- Departmental Over-ride: A student may over-ride the pre-requisite or placement test requirements by receiving a "Departmental Over-ride" from the Math Department. These are used when a student meets qualifications, but does not them on file with TMCC. The Department Chair, the Department Administrative Assistant, several other Math faculty members and some counseling staff are authorized to grant these over-rides.
- Permit to Enroll: A student may enroll in a math class by using a "Permit to Enroll" form. This form is used after the web registration system shuts down for enrollment each semester. The form is available from the Math Department Office. It must be signed by the Department Chair.
Class Sizes
- Increases: Class sizes will not be increased to accommodate particular students except in extreme circumstances of institutional error or exceptional student hardship.
- Full classes: Once a class is full, no further enrollment will occur into that class until a student drops or is purged to make a spot available. Individual faculty members are not allowed to enroll students into their classes when spots become available. A student must either enroll him/herself by using the web-registration system or by a "Permit to Enroll" form from the Math Department. The Math Department does not have "Wait Lists" so enrollment is done on a first come, first served basis.
Enrollment Deadlines
- Lecture Courses: A student must be enrolled in a lecture class with enough instructional time remaining in a semester to justify the credit hour value of the class. Depending on time configuration, this could mean the student needs to be enrolled in the class prior to the second or third class meeting.
- Individualized Instruction Courses (Both Traditional and Computer Assisted): In situations of enrollment past the termination date of the web registration system, a student may be enrolled during the first three weeks of a semester with the approval of the Department Chair. After the first three weeks of the semester, the course instructor's approval is required as well. It is the student's responsibility to make sure all requirements for the course are met.
- Web-based: A student must be enrolled in a web-based class by the end of the second week of classes. A student may be enrolled after this date to the middle of a semester with approval of the Department Chair and the course instructor.
