The availability of quality legal information on the Web has increased dramatically over the past few years. It is now possible to find Supreme Court opinions and current legislative action, search various federal and state codes and regulations, and even search patents online for free.

Federal Resources

  • United States Code Search
    This site provides access to enacted federal laws, searchable by keyword or citation.
  • Code of Federal Regulations
    The CFR contains the rules that federal agencies write to implement the laws in the U.S. Code.
  • Federal Register
    This is a daily publication that contains "Rules, proposed rules and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents."
  • Thomas
    This excellent resource, maintained by the Library of Congress, has a wealth of Congressional information. It includes Public Laws back to 1975, current Bill status, Bill text, roll call votes of both houses, text of the Congressional Record, and Committee Reports.

    This database includes cases decided between 1937 and 1975.
  • Historic Decisions
    Cornell University's site contains more than 500 selected opinions.
  • Recent Decisions
    The U. S. Supreme Court's website contains recent opinions (2002 to 2005), including the latest slip opinions, in-chambers decisions and related orders. This webpage also includes the Court rules, calendar and oral argument transcripts.
  • Supreme Court Collection
    Find Supreme Court opinions for cases since 1990.
