On-Campus Employment for International Students
International students holding an F-1 visa and carrying an I-20 document issued by TMCC are eligible to work on any of the TMCC campuses or sites (Dandini, IGT Applied Technology Center, Meadowood Center and the Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center) for up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full time during winter and summer breaks. However, in addition to an I-20 issued by TMCC, the student must be enrolled in 12 credits at TMCC (excluding workforce development and continuing education and/or audited classes), and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to be eligible to be employed by TMCC.
Per U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations, an F-1 international student must be attending TMCC using an I-20 document issued by TMCC in order to work for a TMCC employer. Students attending school on an I-20 document issued by a different college or university may not work on campus at TMCC without a work permit or written permission for curricular practical training issued by the school from which they received their I-20 document, regardless of whether they attend some classes at TMCC or not.
J-1 international students or scholars who are sponsored by UNR or another agency (such as CDS, Youth America, etc.), and who are using a DS-2019 document, must provide a letter of work authorization from the international office at UNR, or the office of their sponsoring agency (such as CDS, Youth America, etc.), in order to be employed at TMCC. The letter must specify permission for employment at TMCC. If you hold a J-1 visa status, you should contact your sponsor for more information about legal employment in the U.S.
UNR students who have questions about their employment options should contact an international student adviser at the OISS office at UNR at 775-784-6874. International students at TMCC who have questions about employment should call the advising center at TMCC at 775-673-7060 and make an appointment with the international student adviser . Any student who is a nonimmigrant who is employed at TMCC should also schedule an appointment with the non-resident alien tax specialist at 775-673-7013, prior to beginning employment at TMCC.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to work in the U.S., potential employees must have a U.S. Social Security Number. As of October 1, 2004, you may not request that number if you are an F-1 or J-1 international student unless you have a letter from the international office that issued your visa document AND a letter that specifies that you have a job offer in the U.S. Social Security Numbers will no longer be issued to J-1 or F-1 visa holders unless they already have a job offer in hand. If you have questions, please contact the international student adviser , at 775-673-7060.
