GED Preparation Classes: Enrollment Instructions

We are excited that you are interested in pursuing your GED with us! Please complete the necessary steps below. If you would like to talk to our helpful staff right now, please contact us. We want you to know that we are here to help—every step of the way.

1
Determine if the GED prep classes are right for you at this time.
  • Do you have sufficient time and energy to add GED course work to your life?
  • Will your work hours accommodate your class sessions?
  • Do you have reliable child care and transportation?
  • Material in the GED book(s) is written in English at the high school level. (Quick check: if you can read the Reno Gazette-Journal with ease, then you will you'll probably be able to read the GED material). If you or someone you know is not reading at a high school level, consider our literacy program.
  • If English is not your native language and you know that your skills are not at the high school level, consider one of our many levels of English as a Second Language classes. NOTE: All classes are conducted in English at the high school proficient level. (Quick check: If you can follow your favorite (English-language) television program without much problem, then you will probably understand the English in the class.)
  • All incoming students are required to take assessment tests in reading and math so that your specific strengths and weaknesses can be identified. Should you not score high enough on these assessments, one of our placement advisors will recommend appropriate courses of action. TMCC offers one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing and math at every level for adults.
2
Select your session. Get motivated.
  • The morning and evening classes are not interchangeable. You may enroll in morning classes, evening classes or both, but the day's lesson presented in the morning class is NOT the same lesson that will be presented in the evening class.
  • Commit to this block of time every week. A great deal of material must be covered in each class, and there will be no opportunity to make up material you have missed due to absences. More than three unexcused absences in any session may result in your being dropped from the session.
  • Arrange for your child care. Also be sure to arrange for back up child care in the event your primary caregiver has a difficulty. TMCC does not offer child care at the Meadowood Center, and children are not allowed in the classroom or unattended at the college.
  • Schedule your transportation. If you are dependent on bus transportation, check the schedule so you can arrive at class on time. If you are driving, arrange for back up transportation if needed.
  • Check your work schedule to be sure you can attend class every day.
  • Block out time and space to study at home. Although daily homework may not be assigned, you will need to spend several hours a week studying on your own.
  • Envision life after GED. See yourself as successfully completing the course work and taking the official GED test with confidence. Picture yourself in the cap and gown at your graduation. Choose a space to hang your framed GED certificate on your wall.
