THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE NEVADA LTAP CENTER SPRING 2014 ISSUE
THE
I
This past January, we
attended the NLTAPA
winter meeting in
Washington
D.C.,
which was held before
the
Transportation
Research
Board’s
Annual Meeting and
was attended by most
of the LTAP centers
in the country. We
learned the National
Highway
Institute
(NHI), the training
branch of FHWA, has
published a series of web-based training courses primarily directed toward
Pavement and Materials, and Construction and Maintenance. The courses
are condensed from the high-quality NHI courses, which can take two to
three days for instructor-led instruction.
I signed up for three courses to see what they were like and I was very
impressed. I took the Maintenance Training Series, which covers
maintenance activities such as shaping and shoulders, base and sub-base
stabilization and repair to weather-related operations. The entire course
took about eight hours to complete and had 11 modules.
Another course I registered for was the Pavement Preservation Treatment
Series. Again, it was very well organized and consisted of 11 modules
covering materials, different sealing techniques and products such as chip
seals, slurry seals and micro-surfacing, to name a few. There is an online
technical guide which can be downloaded and used as a reference that
offers a thorough description of the technology.
These courses are free until July, after which they will be offered at a very
reasonable price (probably less than $40). I recommend that you check out
these courses at your earliest opportunity.
