TMCCPRIVACYNOTICEFORPRINTEDMATERIALS
Inaccordancewith institutional policyand theU.S. FamilyEducationRights andPrivacyAct of 1974 (FERPA),
TruckeeMeadowsCommunityCollegevigorouslyprotects theprivacyof student education records.The
institutiondoesnot releaseprivate recordsof individual students, suchasgrades andclass schedules,withoutprior
writtenconsent of the student or as specificallyauthorizedbyFERPA. Someof theexceptions to thepriorwritten
consent exceptions are reviewedbelowandarealso found inAppendixGof thecollegecatalog.
Aspermittedunder federal law, the soleexception to theabovepractice is the releaseof “directory” information
considered tobepublic innatureandnot generallydeemed tobean invasionof privacy.AtTruckeeMeadows
CommunityCollege the followingcategories aredefinedas “directory” information: studentname, address,
telephonenumber, email address(es), semestersof enrollment, full-time/part-time status, degree(s) awarded,
emphasisfield(s), certificatefield(s), honors andawards, anddate(s)of graduation.
Studentshave the right to requestnon-disclosureof directory information. If theydonot restrict releaseof this
information, it isprobable that the informationwill be releasedanddisclosed.TruckeeMeadowsCommunity
Collegeusesdirectory information fornon-commercial, educational purposes, suchas tomail notices to students
about changes inpolicies, servicesoropportunities.Directory informationmayalsobeprovidedbycommercial
purposes tobusinesses affiliatedwith the institution, honor societies, thealumni associationand foundation, or
other individuals forpurposes thatmaybebeneficial to students.The institutionexercisesdiscretion in responding
to requests fordirectory informationandmayormaynotprovide such informationwhen requested, depending
on the intendedpurposeof the request.The institutiondoesnot sell or rent student information for a fee.
It is important toconsider carefully thepotential consequencesof restricting the releaseof directory information.
If a student restricts release fornon-commercial educational purposes, the institutionwill beunable toplace
the student’sname inpublications suchashonors andgraduationprograms; toconfirmgraduationanddatesof
attendance topotential employers; toverifyenrollmentwithorganizations suchas insurancecompanies; or to
sendnotifications about specialized scholarshipswithout theexpresswrittenauthorizationof the student.
If, afterdueconsideration, youwish to restrict the releaseof directory information, access theFERPA restriction
component of your
portal, navigate toDemographicData>Security>EditFERPA /DIRECTORY
Restrictions and select from the followingchoices:.

[ ] Donotdisclosemy information fornon-commercial, educationpurposes.
[ ] Donotdisclosemy information forbothcommercial andnon-commercial purposes.
