GeoscienceEmphasis
ASSOCIATEOFSCIENCE
The geoscience emphasis inphysical science is designed
toprovide a solid foundation for students interested
ingeology, natural resources, physical geography,
renewable energy (inparticular geothermal energy),
environmental sciences andplanning, and teaching
of science. After completing the emphasis program,
studentswill bewell prepared to either enter thework
force as a technicianor transfer to four-year professional
baccalaureatedegreeprograms.Theprogramwill
maximize student transfer opportunities.
EMPHASISOUTCOMES
Students completing the emphasiswill:
• Relatehow thevarious earth systems, consistingof thegeosphere,
hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, andbiosphere, interactwith
eachother soas toaffect surface landforms, climate andweather,
oceanic circulationpatterns, andwell beingof life forms including
thehuman condition.
• Utilize the theoryof plate tectonics to explain thedistribution
of volcanoes, earthquakes, energyandmineral resources, and
formationof different types of rocks andminerals.
• Demonstrate anability to identifyand classify rocks andminerals
and relate their origin toboth internal and external forces and
processes. Much likewords inabook tell a story, studentswill
“read” rocks to interpret theirhistoryaswrittenbynature.
• Recognize that changes in lifeover time involve feedbacksbetween
life forms and thephysical environment—that changes inour
physical environment, drivenbyboth internal and external forces,
govern the explosions and extinctions of life formswith time and
will continue todo so.
• Apply the scientificmethodandgeologicknowledgegained ina
capstone course to interpret thegeologichistoryof select areas of
theReno region throughfield studies, involving rockand structure
identificationandplotting theirdistribution tomakebasicbut
informativegeologicmaps alsouseful inassessments of geological
hazards.
