ASSOCIATEOFSCIENCE
Environmental science focuses on issues that areof
relevance to all citizens of theUnitedStates and all
countries.Withgrowth anddevelopment comes the
need for people trained in environmental sciences
that candealwith environmental issues. Sustainable
development is a local and regional concern, especially
asNevada’s growth continues to lead thenation.The
associateof sciencedegree in environmental science
is specificallydesigned to transfer seamlessly into the
environmental science curriculum at theUniversityof
Nevada, Reno. Itwill alsoprepare students for transfer
into similar programs at other four-year institutions.
DEGREEOUTCOMES
Students completing thedegreewill:
• Performboth laboratoryandfield experimentsusing the scientific
method,which requires observation, hypothesis testing, data
collection, and the applicationof basicbiological and chemical
principles to explain results.
• Demonstrate effectiveoral andwritten communication, teamwork
and collaboration in scientific,mathematical andother settings.
• Utilizeprimaryand secondary sources in the scientific literature to
obtain informationpertaining to environmental science.
• Explain the impacts of different environmental pollutants and
critically evaluatevariouspollutionmitigation efforts in the
context of regional andglobal policies, economics, andpolitics.
• Analyze the impact of humanactivities onbiodiversity, andhow
patterns of biodiversityhave shapedhumanactivities, employing
the ecological, evolutionary, andgeological factors that control
patterns of biodiversityand extinction.
