Student Employment Classifications and Wage Rates

The average hourly wage in the Reno/Sparks area as of "2020" is $16.50-$18.  For this reason, it is recommended that the starting wage for student workers be at least $12 per hour or more where applicable based on the divisions below. Be aware the minimum wage is now $9.75 and is expected to increase to $13 over the next 3-5 years, so remain competitive to attract and retain student workers.  

Note: It is also recommended that a wage premium of $0.50 per hour be paid to students who provide frequent use of their bilingual skills in the workplace.

Division I: Labor and Attendant Positions
Class Pay Scale Duties
A $9.75 Simple attendant duties. Little responsibility. Minimum work involvement.
B $9.75–$10.75 Simple attendant duties. Added responsibility and work involvement.
C $10.75–$11.75 Unskilled labor. Some exertion is required, but no strenuous activity. Responsibility in some cases.
D $12–$15 Skilled labor. More exertion than Class C. Strenuous activity, responsibility.

Division II: Clerical/Administrative Support
Class Pay Scale Duties
A $9.75 Simple clerical tasks, unskilled work. Requires supervision by classified or other more responsible student personnel.

B

$9.75–$10.75  Clerical assistant. Added responsibility, less supervision.
C $10.75–$11.75  Skilled clerical assistant, with experience. Little supervision is needed.
D

$12–$15

Highly skilled clerical assistant, with experience. Little or no supervision is needed.

Division III: Instructional Support

A $9.75 Assists instructors. Works under supervision.
B $9.75–$10.75 Assists instructors and performs classroom duties. May work independently.
C $10.75–$11.75 Highly skilled assistant with experience. Makes decisions, little or no supervision required.
D $12–$15 Advanced knowledge in the discipline is required. Works independently. May supervise other students.

Division IV: Technical Support
Class Pay Scale Duties
A $9.75-$10.50  Minimal technical knowledge and responsibility required. Works under supervision.
B $10.50–$11.50  More technical knowledge is required. Added responsibility, less supervision.
C $11.50–$13.50  Highly skilled technical abilities. Makes decisions, little or no supervision required.
D $13.50–$15  Advanced technical knowledge required. Works independently. May supervise other students.
