GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)
The Nevada State GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program is administered by the Nevada Department of Education. The mission of Nevada GEAR UP is to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Currently more than 4,000 students are served by the Nevada State GEAR UP program in 31 high schools across the state.
Who is Eligible?
GEAR UP is part of a cohort that graduated from high school in June, 2012 and is not open to the public for application.
GEAR UP students may be eligible for up to $10,000 if they participate in GEAR UP, graduated with a standard or advanced diploma from high school with a 2.0 GPA or higher, complete the FAFSA and attend a Nevada college or university.
While in college, the student must be enrolled in 12 credits at the same college per term and receive a GPA of 2.0 or higher to maintain eligibility. In addition, students must continue to file a completed FAFSA application each year to qualify for the GEAR UP grant. At the community college, the award is $750 per semester for fulltime enrollment and $375 during the summer term for half-time (6 credits) enrollment. The award eligibility expires in six years and the total GEAR UP award cannot exceed $10,000.
Eligible GEAR UP students who have completed a FAFSA and the corresponding financial aid file, and demonstrate financial need may be awarded an additional $750 per semester GEAR UP matching grant from the college during the fall and/or spring terms. If the student does not complete his/her financial aid file he/she is not eligible for the matching grant.
To continue to receive the GEAR UP grant each term, the student must successfully complete 12 credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. If the student does not meet this minimum standard, the student is not eligible until the minimum standard is met without receiving the grant. Students will be automatically reinstated once eligibility is regained.
