Education Teacher Preparation

What is the program about?

Teacher preparation at TMCC provides a broad range of instructional services for students pursing a teaching career. In our program, students will:

  • start a professional portfolio addressing five domains of competence as established by national standards
  • satisfy requirements to enter the University of Nevada, Reno College of Education to finish a Bachelor degree
  • synthesize Nevada state educational standards
  • gain multicultural education training

How is the job market?

The teaching profession is hot right now. As student enrollment increases each year in Nevada and retiring rates for current teachers are at an all-time high, there is consistent growing demand for new teachers.

How much can I earn?

The Washoe County School District teacher's salary schedule ranged from $27,907 to $57,292 in the 2004-05 fiscal year. Other salary schedules in the state vary and all schedules are subject to change each year. The salaries apply to 185-day contracts for traditional single-track, year-round calendars schools and 175-day contracts for multi-track schools.

What are the course offerings?

Currently, TMCC offers 10 courses that cover information technology in education, special education, classroom management, children's literature, and introduction to historical, sociological, political, psychological, and philosophical foundations of education. Many courses require site-based observation experience at local elementary and secondary campuses. All courses transfer toward a teaching credential.

What does the program cost?

Costs for this program are calculated on a per credit basis. Information about TMCC tuition and fees is available through Accounting Services.

What makes this program great?

TMCC has a dynamic and growing teacher preparation faculty. Many of our instructors are currently active in local elementary and secondary campuses. All of the instructors have a wealth of experience in classroom teaching, administration and education research.
