English Course Substitutions, Placement, and Prerequisites
For English course substitutions, please start at Admissions and Records in the Red Mountain Building, room 319. Here, you will request and pick up your course substitution card. Bring this card to the English department, with all documentation (course descriptions and transcripts), and ask to see the department chair of the English department. After the English department chair approves the substitution, take the card to the DEAN of the Division for final signature, in Sierra building, room 203.
The following guidelines apply for placement into English 101.
All ACCUPLACER Testing is done through the Testing Center, in RDMT 121.
For "Direct" Placement into English 101 and 107:
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score of 106 or higher
For Placement into English 101 and 107:
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score between 98-105 plus
- An ACCUPLACER reading comprehensive score of 85 plus
- An ACCUPLACER essay sample score of 8, 10, 12
For Placement into English 098:
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score of 0-97
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score of 98-105, a reading comprehension score of less than 85
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score of 98-105, a reading comprehension Score of 85, but an essay sample score of only 2, 4, and 6
- SSK 109 or READ 135 is highly recommended
For Placement into English 091: (Note for those who place into ENG 091 a concurrent enrollment in READ 093 is required)
- An ACCUPLACER sentence skill score of 0-49
- An ACCUPLACER reading comprehension score of 0-49
- EPY 101 is highly recommended
English 101 is a prerequisite for English 102
English 107 is a prerequisite for English 108
