The mission of the Truckee Meadows Community College English Department is to promote literacy, with a specific focus on the ability to read, write, and think critically. This mission also includes fostering information literacy. Literate individuals can gather, analyze, and communicate information effectively, think creatively, and draw independent conclusions. These skills are the cornerstone of a healthy democracy and are essential for the future of our community in an increasingly information-based economy.
This purpose is achieved through academic classes and programs that encourage learners to express themselves clearly, both verbally and in writing. Students are guided to grow intellectually and develop into humane, responsible, and productive members of our community.
The department supports these goals through scholarship and instruction in literature, creative writing, journalism, reading, and ESL. These objectives are woven into our wide range of programs, from our contributions to general education—where students are introduced to critical thinking, reading, and writing skills—to our AA degree programs that train the next generation of writers, teachers, and scholars.
