Early Childhood Education Program

TMCC's Early Childhood Education (ECE) program began in 1984 and was originally the Child Development program. In the mid-1990s, the name was changed to Early Childhood Education, following the trend in the field at that time.

The ECE program meets the diverse needs of students and helps them achieve their educational goals.

  • Conveniently scheduled classes, including evenings and weekends.
  • Most courses are available in two formats: traditional classroom on the Dandini Campus, and online.
  • Small class sizes.
  • High quality faculty with expertise and experience in early care and education.
  • Campus Child Care Center accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for observation, field experience, and practicum.
  • A variety of degree, certificate, and course options.

The mission of the ECE program at TMCC is to provide professional preparation for students for careers in Early Care and Education, who will seek to enrich the quality of life for all children and families, and the diverse communities in which they work and live.

The Early Childhood Education program at Truckee Meadows Community College helped build the foundation for my career path. It has helped develop my skills and self-confidence as a professional in the ECE field.

  2. Students in the ECE program must complete the required practicum experience through TMCC unless prior arrangements have been made in advance with the ECE Program Coordinator.

Students in the ECE Program

The ECE program at TMCC has nearly 200 enrolled students. As is common in the Early Childhood Education profession, most students in the program are female. Our students include individuals already working in early childhood programs in the community, as well as those who are completing pre-professional training before joining the workforce. Many students are taking courses to meet the continuing education hours required by Nevada child care regulations. While a degree in Early Childhood Education can be completed in two years by attending college on a full-time basis, most students attend part time and work.
