The "Mixed Blessings" Symposium, to be held November 8-10, 2012 at Truckee Meadows Community College and Nevada Museum of Art, will feature presentations and creative projects of American Indian art, literature and film. Scholars, artists, and members of Indian Nations from across the Great Basin and United States will come together to discuss topics related to contemporary social realities and self-identities of indigenous people. The Symposium will feature a keynote address by Lucy R. Lippard at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9, at TMCC's Dandini Campus.
This symposium has been inspired by Lucy R. Lippard's book - Mixed Blessings, New Art in a Multicultural America. Mixed Blessings is the first book to discuss the cross-cultural process taking place in the work of contemporary Latino, Native-, African-, and Asian-American artists. It is a complex meditation on the relationships of people to their cultures. Lucy R. Lippard challenges conventional approaches and explores the role of images in a changing society. Among her subjects are the uncertainty of exile; the confusion of identity in attempts to climb out of the melting pot; and art that speaks for itself, reversing stereotypes and reclaiming history and memory.
